Hi Everyone,

New the forum, and new to setting up a home theatre. Currently finishing the basement, and I have room (and permission) to buy a new TV, in the 60 to 65 inch range.

Budget is not really and issue - but of course if I can do things economically I would like to.

Right now I have a choice between the two units mentioned above. Taking size out of the equation - which one is the better deal? They are both priced about the same - though I can get the Samsung for about $200.00 less. Probable use will be movies/video games.

Will be connected to a Onkyo TX-NR717.

Still need to build my Speaker package too (suggestions on that welcome as well).

Thanks.

Adam

Well the VT30 (are you sure you dont mean the VT50?) is 2 years old at this point...IMO I would go with the F8500 over the VT30....I usually pick the bigger TV, but when talking 2 year old tech vs this year, I would pick this year........If you are talking about the VT50, I would need to know more about the room that the set is going into...Is the room light controlled (is there a lot of ambient light)? As farr as speakers go it depends on your budget and size of the room, that can lead to a very expensive and slippery slope if you dont set a "hard cap" on the budget......

BTW If budget wasnt an issue dpending on how long I could wait, I would wait for the VT60\ZT60 sets to be reviewed\released especially if this is a light controlled setting........Id even check out the 65ST60 so far the ST60 series is looking to be a great bang fo rthe buck set....

It is a Vt30. Friend works at a store where they still have 1 or 2 of them. Guess they bought a bunch in bulk - but maybe I will double check..he might mean vt 50.

The TV is going in the basement - there is one small window to the left of where it will be - but will have curtains. The TV viewing area is all Pot Lights on dimmer switches - actually all the lights in the entire basement will be on dimmers.

There is a walkout, but it is around the corner, so should not impact viewing too much.

My budget for the TV - $3500 is probably the max - though I would like closer to $3000.

For speakers - not really sure what a reasonable budget is. I am going to do 2 zones - majority of the sound at the TV - and 2 speakers in another location for music.

There is absolutely NO reason to get a 65VT30 for $3500. Best Buy still has the superior 65VT50 in stock for $3300 + tax. That should be your comparison. With that said, I would always go for the larger screen UNLESS you are an extreme videophile. Only then would you be able to see the slight improvement (if any) of the F8500 over the VT50 but EVERYONE will notice the increase in screen size. that's my $0.02.

between 3000-3500 the folllowing sets come into play........

64 Samsung F8500
65 Panasonic 65VT60
60 Samsung F8500
60 Panasonic 65VT60
65 Panasonic 65ST60 (hasnt shipped as of yet, but form the looks of it seems to be a good bang for the buck set and below the bottom end of your budget)

Last years 65VT50 is also in there as well (if you can find one), depending on the place it may be around or lower than 3K.....

For the speakers I would set a hard budget and stick with it, these forums will suck all of your money away with some of the suggestions people give you wink.gif I would head over to the Speaker forum as there is a wealth of knowledge over there.....

I would still avoid the VT30, even though it was tops when it was released the ST60 may be able to out perform it today.......

I have been searching for a 65VT50 - but like you said - hard to find (more like impossible). And finding a 65VT60 is the same (if I am reading things correctly - are they are 2013 new release?). I can find them in the US (I am in Canada) but no shipping available, etc. Looks like my timing is a little off - may have to wait a couple of weeks, but no biggie..basement isn't ready yet anyway.
