Hi all,

My 8 year old Sammy HLR-5067w died this week. One or more of the boards have given up the ghost and so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'm looking for a 1080p in the 55" range. I've decided that 50" is too small and 60 is too large for the space.

I'm looking to keep it under $1000.00.
I'm leaning towards Plasma since I think it offers the best bang for the buck. 3d is a nice to have but not critical. Same for Smart TVs. I figure I can always upgrade my old Blu-ray player to a smart one pretty cheaply.

This will be in a family room with a sliding glass door to the left with some curtains (plus it will be in an entertainment center where the sides can help block stray light.). Uses will be HDTV via DirectTV, XBox/Wii-U gaming and Blu-ray movies.

Here are some choices I'm looking at:

Panasonic T-CP55UT50 Costco has this for $750. All the reviews give it high marks.
Samsung PN51e535A3 - Costco has it for $649.
Panasonic TCP50UT50 @ Best Buy for $679.
Panasonic TC-P50S60 @ BB $699.
Panasonic TC-P50ST60 @ BB $999 (but again a bit smaller than I'd like).
Samsung PN51F5300 - Walmart has it for $650
Panasonic TCP50U50 @ Best Buy for $499

I've also seen some 50"+ LEDs, but many of those are running about $1000, which is really at the upper edge of my budget.
Of those I've seen (a lot on clearance)

Panasonic TC-L55ET5 for $1100 @ BB.
Toshiba 50L2200U for $699 on clearance locally
LG 55ls4500 $750
Insignia NS-55E480A13A $649 @ BB

I've looked at Vizio and LG, but the good ones seem to be out of my price range.

I'd like to get one this weekend if possible. Of these which is the best choice? Or is there a better option I've missed?

Thanks.

If you can go to 55 then out of those choicecs I would select the TC-P55S60 (the 55" version of the 50" you selected)...its 1$ below your current "top" level.......

The TC-P55S60 looks like a good deal, but I can't find anyone in So. Cal carrying it. I can find the 50S60 @ best buy but not the 55.

Also at a grand it's right at the top of my budget with tax it's going to put me over it. Is the S60 series that much better than the UT50s?

The UT50 is last years model, so I would say yes. So far the S and ST 60 models have been getting very good reviews......The only reeason I suggested that model is due to the fact you ahve a few pricced at 999 if not above wink.gif

Yeah, I put those in on the outside chance I could stretch the budget a bit. But in reality I'm looking to stay around $700.

Today I just replaced a 7 yr old Sammy hl-s4266w DLP with the 50s60. Like you I could not find the 55 anywhere. The s60 looked better to me than the ut50 and u54. Even though I have not had it long, I am very satisfied.

Since I can't find the 55S60, and if I wanted to go with a 55" set over the 50s60 which of those that I have listed is the best choice? I've seen the 55UT50 and liked it, (it was in a Costco and pretty brightly lit. Hence why it was on my short list. I'll stop by a BB and take another look at the 50S60 and see what I think about it against the 50ut50.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Okay. I made a decision. I felt that the lure of the larger screen and 3D for only 50 dollars more was too good to pass up. So I went to Costco and picked up the t-cp54ut50. Set it up with my Denon 1912 receiver. Popped Skyfall in the BD player and it looks good.

I'll have to let it burn in then calibrate it. I have 90 days to decide if I like it. So time will tell.
