I am noticing brightness fluctuation when the watching mostly sports. Seems to happen when the camera pans back and forth with a lot of motion happening on the screen. The screen flickers and the image becomes slightly more vivid or brighter and then second later back to a little darker.
This is my first plasma and yes I have tried all the settings that have to deal with automatic light ambient. Nothing seems to fix it. As far as I can tell it is only happening like I said with sports and such.
I have read that this brightness fluctuation has been a known issue in the past.
Any help is much appreciated...thanks

I have tried them all and seems to be the same. You can see it more in standard mode because the image is a little darker to start, but still happens in THX mode.

Is this on a North American VT60 or some other country's version?

Nobody uses Standard mode because it's dark and horrible (especially for sports), and THX is more for watching movies and is not great for bright content such as sports. And those picture modes don't give you access to the extended Pro Settings menu either. Maybe this is the problem.

You should setup a Custom mode for Sports instead - there are more adjustments and the picture is nice and bright so maybe that will not introduce the issue you're seeing on the less-than-optimal picture modes that you've been using.

You are probably experiencing ABL. The plasma can not handle a screen with a high % of brightness and therefore throttles back the brightness so as to not overload the power supply.

He read your post, but you're not giving us much useful information to go by. No country info, no specific picture modes you're trying, no specific picture settings you're using, no source information, no content information, etc etc.

Are you seeing the same behavior with news broadcasts or prime time network programming or movies or DVDs or Blu-Ray and stuff? Or just "sports"?

And forget about Standard mode, it's the worst picture mode in the menu and only exists to get energy ratings. Zero people use it.

I read it. It may happen in different modes, but the ABL can be impacted nonetheless. Because a picture starts out darker, it doesn't mean the ABL will not kick in and throttle brightness back when the signal calls for large expanses of brightness.

The calibration SNAFUs seems to suggest it, egads. All eyes on the shootout...my preorder hinges on their findings.

I'm in the same boat. If it is only the difficulty of calibration, that is one thing and not a deal breaker. However, the shootout won't tell us if the set will have long term issues like the VT30. How can this happen?. The VT50 series calibrates perfectly. It's hard to stomach taking a chance on these new displays.

I still wonder why these calibration problems haven't been seen on the eu models. David Mackenzie was asked if he had any problems calibrating the 60 and he said no. I would assume that the panels are the same with the exception of software.

^You're right (I didn't follow those models closely because I've been sitting pretty with a Kuro on the sidelines)...it's one of the worst predicaments because of the purported limited availability of the ZT60. If one waits, finding one might be next to impossible (the arrival of mine has already been pushed back to late July).

I'm in a similar boat. Really not sure what I'm going to do at this point. Part of me is thinking of just waiting until next year to be honest.

I'm beginning to think the same thing as well. My ZT is scheduled for delivery on 5/16. Based on the shootout results, I may cancel before it is delivered. If not I have the 60 days as a silver rewards member.

Hey, Mr. Guinea Pig, if you do get one, can you leave it on 24/7 for the first 60 days? wink.gif That will get you to 1440 hours at least. If all is well, I'll be more confident about keeping my preorder intact, lol.

Same here...unfortunate, but hopefully some of this stuff is ironed out for next year, since I doubt anyone is going to try and reinvent the wheel regarding plasma, so they can refine. Maybe another jump towards improving mll for Panny and Sammy, and getting rid of all these stability issues. It's sad isn't it?

If I take delivery I will run it as much as possible. Every day I hear something that makes me more apprehensive. First the calibration issues and the, probably unfounded, specter of VT30 syndrome. Now reports of fluctuating brightness.

A friend had the same problem (also during live sports) with a different Panasonic model and after a little research I told him to check the troubleshooting section of the user manual where it said this can be fixed by turning off something in setup called "Automatic Brightness Control" or something like that. He turned it off and no more problems. So, when all else fails, read the instructions. LOL!

I am having the exact same problem watching NBA with the C.A.T.S turned off with all the modes as well.

Any resolution to this?

I posted about this very same problem in the "big vt60 thread".

I actually recorded some hockey on the pvr. I rewound and played through a series of brightness pops several times and they always appeared in the same place, leaving me to believe that this is happening at the game. Another member here suggested that it is neon lights/flashes from photographers. While this may be true I really find it hard to watch because the flashing is constant. To me, it still seems like an over looked problem with the set. This is my first plasma and I have not owned an led/lcd panel but I wonder if this happens on led/lcd panels?

Upsetting problem because everything I watch with the exception of sports is amazing.

I just did the standard trick with my zt60 today and it worked great. That was until I noticed the screen get dimmer than bright again. It seems to happen every 20 seconds or so. With c.a.t.s off.

The flickering is due to strobe lights at the rink. To show that it is not the TV, if your cable/sat receiver can show the video in a small box (like when you bring up the program schedule) look for the flashing. If it only happens in the video window and the rest of the screen does not show it, well...

The standard trick is going to standard mode adjusting the contrast down a bit and then all the way back to 100. You can then flip through the picture modes and when you go back to standard (which is usually the darkest setting) will be as bright as vivid with great gama etc. great for a bright room. Has tons of pop to the picture very 3D like.
