You're absolutely correct. I was clearly looking at another model. That's what I get for trying to operate on 4-5 hours of sleep last night. frown.gif Lowest price I see is $4471 and I'm not ready to jump back in the saddle with Sony on such a momentous purchase (almost $1k over what I'm willing to spend). Banding and blooming keep me further away.

The Sony Sony XBR-65HX950 is a full array LED backlight set with local dimming. It can be bought in the Amazon marketplace starting at about $4500. It seems to be discontinued though as it's not listed on their website with the current lines.

I think it's still going to live a while longer as the videos haven't been posted yet. Once that happens, folks will be able to watch the shootout again or for the first time (for those who missed them live as I did) and then they'll start nit-picking at the details and start debating all over again by posting on this thread for probably at least a couple more weeks. smile.gif

By all accounts it is discontinued.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working.

Yes, I was inquiring about Sony HX950. The full array backlight with local dimming. Not HX850, Not the new 4k TV.

My local Sony Store (YMMV) and some Best Buy/Magnolia (if they have inventory) has the 65" Sony HX950 on sale for $3500. They are trying to get rid of them to make room for 2013 TV's.

My living room is indeed pretty bright with a large window right next to the TV. I have a hard time choosing between Samsung F8500, Sony HX950, and Panasonic ZT60.

I personally would go for the HX950 if the brightness is a factor and you get a huge price reduction like that - that way you'll still get the best blacks as well - it beats both tv's in quite a few categories for very little 'visible' tradeoffs. I've also heard that with the polarizing ps3 3d glasses it has amazing 3d PQ from some of the 3d experts.

Best blacks eh? Quite a few would argue with that. Also, blooming and poor off axis viewing are very visable tradeoffs.

The local dimming has better blacks. Blooming and minor banding on that set are very hard to see and are pretty good trades for better whites, blacks, and 3d. See my profile for an example of bad banding (Samsung lcd)

I prefer plasma right now, but I also watch tv mostly at night. Different people have different needs.

I definitely considered the sony 950, but it basically wasn't available to me locally. full array LED did seem like the best fit for me. I like extremely deep blacks, don't really care/notice motion blur, and despite the nearly non-existent IR, it's still kinda nice to not even worry about it.

if you can get the sony for the same price as the vt60 or f8500, I would definitely do some side-by-side comparisons before deciding. but I don't think i'd pay more for the sony. now that I've had the f8500 for almost a month, there's not really anything I want to be better, realistically. I mean, it could be blacker, but everything could be.

I missed the very beginning of day one and just saw it last night. It struck me that all three panels are more mirror-like than my GT60. I thought that someone had made a similar comment very soon after the shootout. Can anyone with a VT or GT 50 series and attended the event comment?

I'm SO indecisive in picking a TV mad.gif. I read couple more reviews and here's the pros and cons that matters to me

Sony HX950: Pros - Full array back lit local dimming produces great blacks and great brightness. I can get it at $3500. Cons - Possible off angle viewing and blooming issue.
Samsung F8500: Pros - Very bright for a plasma. Cons - 24p (96hz) content with Cinema Smooth on would slightly reduce black level.
Panasonic ZT: Pros - Great blacks. Handles 24p. No off angle and blooming issue. Cons - Better in bright room than VT, but not as bright as LED and Samsung.

Any additional insight is much appreciated!!!

Does anybody know if one brand handles poorer quality video feed (720p) better than the other? I watch TV (1080i or 720p) more than Blu-ray (1080p). I suspect TV as big as 65" will see more flaws at 720p channels.

The video processing on the Samsung can be upgraded annually via the Smart Evolution Kit, another variable to consider. Also, even when it reaches its half-brightness point the Samsung will be able to hit calibration targets for brightness. If the ZT60 can barely hit 30 fL—a figure I'm not all the sure is accurate—then how long will it be before it can't come close? Even the VT60 offers quite a bit more headroom, being that it can be almost 20% brighter at the same calibration settings.

I think the question would be do you plan to get your set calibrated and if so then if brightness is a concern you may want to choose less acurate, but brighter for day viewing and then the "darker" for night....If you dont plan on watching of keeping the TV until it reaches that half life though, then its all moot as youll never really see the "change";..
