They are a notch away from doing it clearly. If the continue at this rate I might be getting next year's model smile.gif

always a little hectic in the beginning with firmware wink.gif give it some time and they will become less frequent...Id rather ahve them fix the bugs they find upfront and "early" though and the "pops" was a major fix that they got rid of right away.....Right now it looks like youll have one or the other (deep blacks\shadow detail or the ability to get brighter, both of which have thier pluses\minuses.....Panasonic went for the depeest blacks and shadow detail this year and sacrificed peak luminance, samsung went for the brightest set and sacrificed the deeper blacks. If they can improve the blacks while keeping the brightness it would be a trully stunning set, but I think we'll ahve to wait for OLED for something like that...

I say that based on my actual experience. The es8000 still gets lots of updates 1 yr out. If I bought a f8500 I would not buy a calibration within the first year since I would want all the updates and fixes just like you.

They've shown they are seriously competitive this year. If they unleash a firmware update that does improve upon these areas in measurable ways, I, too, can't imagine the Panasonic being preferable for 3D.

Ya I think so. To be honest I bet the HDTVTest guy said it best int he 8500 review: that the Panasonic advantages were "subtle" whereas the Samsung strengths were strong enough such that their greyscale tracking issues wouldn't really be all that problematic... and even then this wouldn't be an apparent difference til the panny is calibrated.

But I think maybe there will some accuracy purists who really do appreciate the more accurate Panasonic advantage, for whom that subtle advantage is more important.

But to most users, out of the box? Samsung seems to have a slight edge. So instead of being 9 out of 10 its like 9.1.

I think we'd all have fun watching a 3D movie on either set.

For those who attended the VE shootout:

From what you gathered by seeing the FPs, will the extra light output from the F8500 or the better A/R filter on the ZT60 be a bigger deal for rooms with nautral light?

From everything that I've read and what I gathered by watching the Shootout, the F8500 seems like it's every bit as capable as the Pannys in nearly all prevalent categories, which I find to be a very big plus for the AVS world.

60F8000; RX-V367; TSi300 x2; YST-SW102; Harmony 650; Apple TV; Microsoft Xbox One Console; RF-HTS120;

In fact, it was the VT & ZT that were significantly clipping white and was one of the main reasons why the calibrators couldn't raise the brightness any more than what they had dialed in. One of the tests showed this very clearly. Yet the 8500 aced this test and showed all the detail that was there.

It was good hear your thought on this.

I got home from vacation Friday just in time to watch the Shootout. Today, I found out that you were there. I would have like to have seen you streaming on my computer, What were you wearing?

Ken Ross,

I didn't watch the shoot out, but how did you like the motion of the plasmas vs. the lcds like the Sony X900 and the Samsung F8000? In the past you said that you find the inherent judder in plasmas unnatural, but obviously it was not enough to prevent you from ordering the Samsung F8500.

New: 2x Cisco 8642 w/ multi-room. Yes, that's right TWC has a multi-room DVR!!

Old: 2x SA8300HD TWC Navigator MDN 2.4.6-19

Guy on the left behind the reps has brown hair

Two guys also behind the reps: One in a Hawaiian shirt and the other with dark hair. Both have a balding spot, which I hope is not Ken. Which leads me to a shirt I saw a couple days ago...

agreed, with the ZT/F8500/VT you cant really go wrong each has thier pluses and minuses....If anything the shootout showed how much of a performer that the ST60 is, even though that talked got squashed really quickly...
