Is 2013 the last time to buy plasma?

Will plasma improve any in 2014?

I'm sure the plasma haters will say that plasma may be dead come 2014.

Others may say that plasma might carry on another year but with no improvements.

And of course the all times present sales force here at AVS will claim that now is the ONLY time to buy.

Have we seen plasma's greatest moment?

Are people that don't need a set and chance it waiting on 2014--are they smart or foolish?

incremental improvements yes, revolutionary most likely no IMO...Not the end of plasma this year as both Samsung and Panasonic have something to shoot for still..

Would incremental improvements next year in 2014 be enough to finally dethrone Kuro for those who don't think it has already happened?

For the 500M/101FDs, I don't think incremental will do it. Even to match their factory level BLs, it will take a substantial further reduction from Panasonic (even if it is only noticeable 5% of the time) and even more from Samsung.

So in other words the shootout really was a farce--after all the hype--the state of the art has still not been exceeded.

That is sad--it seems like one is still better off buying a used fantastically calibrated Kuro than the best that is produced today.

Is Panasonic USING all of the patents that it bought from Pioneer?

I have no idea of Plasma technology, but if Samsung can combine their Super Contrast Panel (Big subpixel structure) with Panasonic gap less glass panel, surely the result would be amazing..

Now that I think about it, IMHO, the Samsung Super Contrast Panel is really one of a few major improvement in Plasma display tech.. At the moment, I can't think of any Marketing hype that clearly deliver it promise.. You can actually see the increase in brightness, not just some minimal increase either..

IMHO, if I wanted a bright TV, I'd get an LCD. I care more about accurate picture detail, levels of gradiation, and color saturation.

Plasma has reached end of life with the pinnacle of it's tech - the VT60.

VT60 still suffers from banding, soft images, dithering and a few other issues.

Plasma reached the pinnacle many years ago in the name of Kuro when Panasonic was making mediocre plasma's.

And yes Samsung Super Contrast Panel is really one of a few major improvement in Plasma.

Other than more brightness/light output, I don't think there can be too many more improvements. Color and gamma is just about spot on for both manufacturers and blacks are said to be outstanding.....it is going to be hard to squeeze out anymore meaningful MLL that is real impacting at this twilight stage of plasma given the business and market realities (most are screaming for more light, not deeper blacks...remember enthusiasts are a tiny drop in the marketshare bucket). More apps are always a given, but I think this is practically as good as it's going to get.

I don't want Panasonic or Samsung to dethrone the Kuro. There really isn't much need to improve their current models any further - they've pretty much already arrived and are more than good enough for 98% of the buying public.

Let dead Kings rest in peace.

Long Live The King !!

Well, there is still some hope for substanial improvements from Samsung. Considering how well the 8500 has tested, thats a major positive.

As Panny has stopped R&D on plasma and produced their last "panel", small improvements are all one can hope for. Panny 's top plasmas already have outstanding pic quality though.

No, they looked at the patents and it stated it required Panasonic to charge $7,000 for their TVs.
