Like you, what I don't fathom is why it works through the AVR with the older TV but only direct to the newer TV, yet other things work just fine both ways. And why it's just the OSD....weird stuff, man.

If you can watch the blu-ray movie A-OK & only have a problem with the OSD - appears it is the OSD - borrow a newer player - ones you have are older models! AND remember what Sherlock Holmes said ""Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth."

I managed to wade through the flashing OSD to change the player's resolution. Forcing 1080p had no effect; not better, not worse, the same.

But, when I changed to 720p or 1080i, then the OSD worked fine. This is interesting because I think my Roku is just 720p. Not sure about the WDTV though, I'll have to check.

Looks like I'll have to swing by the local big box store to see if a newer player is the answer. Any suggestions for a decent cheap BD player? Not ready to spend another $500 right now to give the Oppo a try.

Still don't understand why it works direct but not through the AVR. That doesn't seem to indicate a problem with the player, although maybe that would be the easiest "fix".

Just because there is a knob doesn't mean you should turn it.

look here at Sound&Vision - the top pick http://www.soundandvision.com/content/panasonic-dmp-bdt220-blu-ray-3d-player

You can get the update model Model: DMP-BDT230 from BB for $80 - can't beat that with a stick!

For example, Panasonic has sold somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 ZTs according to the insider. We have seen independent reports of 3 or 4 cracked ones. That is a 99.9% + rate of not having the crack. Yet accordingly on here, the sky is failing and now folks are afraid to get their TV repaired because it may crack.

As another data point, I had the fan repair done on my ZT and I asked the tech (who also repairs Samsung and other brands) how many he had repaired for the fan issue. He said around 20-25. I asked if he had ever seen any cracked ones, and he said no, and had never heard of the issue either, even though he had been doing fan noise repairs for many months.

I am not advising anyone to do anything, but just pointing out the facts as I know them, vs the scare mongering going on.

The repairman wouldn't see the micro fractures as many of them didn't become noticeable or even appear until after the fan fix was applied (and the back was improperly reinstalled). Otherwise, you're dead on.

Why not get this one.  It is previous year model, so price is cheap. You can even watch streamed content movies in 24p!!!

It's only a bargain if you need the analog outputs & 2 HDMI outputs - http://www.trustedreviews.com/panasonic-dmp-bdt500_Blu-ray-Player_photos_7

This is an upscale model with no improvement in the blu-ray performance - most folks connect with HDMI and have no need for these outputs so why pay for something you don't need - your call!

Speaking of BD players, do you guys prefer the Panny 230 over the Sony s5100? I just purchased the s5100 on a dime from Best Buy but can swap at BB if you think the Panasonic or perhaps similar Samsung is better? Thanks guys.

I like my Sony s5100. Works well and was really cheap before Christmas...probably still is.

That's good to hear. I wanted to get something to use primarily for blu ray to take the load off of the PS3 (and due to the loud noise of the PS3), so I grabbed the Sony at BB the other day for a great deal. I've watched two movies on it so far and everything appears to be okay. I know most of these players should produce essentially the same quality of image from blu ray, but I am willing to swap it if there is a compelling reason to grab the Panny or Samsung instead.

My in-law's got us whatever model of the Panasonic that looks like it would go with the ZT60 (never opened it and returned it since it was more expensive than the Sony). The Sony works and you're right that they all should produce essentially the same quality of image from blu ray. I'm more of a streaming guy myself so besides the James Bond collection and a few random discs here and there throughout the year, I probably won't be using my Sony that much. I guess if you weren't happy with the picture, I'd take it back and try something new. I don't really care how "ugly" or "beautiful" all of my tv electronic components go with each other...the Sony is black and that's fine with me.

IF they can find a brand new one, that would be the best deal on a 65 inch and much like the way I got the deal on my 60 inch (started out as a open box and was replaced with a brand new in the box one).

Yea that's what happened, I bought an open box it had burn in and they replaced it with a new one, that's why it bugs me because aside from that it's perfect. I was reading that Vaseline would fill in the light scratch and make it disappear, is that true? Also, which camera is the best for the TV and u know the VT has an app called red karaoke, does the zt have the same ability to play karaoke?

I've heard the vaseline thing also, but I'd be worried about rubbing anything on the panel that might affect the anti-glare coating. Don't know about the camera or the karaoke question but I'm sure someone else can answer to that.

I have a VT and cannot find that app on my TV. There was another one app that was brought up at the Shootout, some kind of running game where you pick where you want to run and I cannot find that one either on my VT60.

I believe both of these apps use the camera with the built in mic so not sure of they would be on the ZT60, but like I said I can't even find them on my VT60.

I contacted geek squad but they dong fix cosmetic damage, my guy at BB was cool enough to say he would replace it with a new one but there aren't any available anywhere. Does anyone know of any other options? It's in the black border and not the screen but it still bugs me.

65" ZT60 for $2100 ? That's $700 off the lowest new price. Was this an open box? Maybe it was returned because of the scratch.

Any Best Buy dead pixel exchange luck?

Finally got my NIB 60" ZT60 delivered this morning aaand it has a dead pixel :( Noticeable on the grey, green (though sometimes it turns on with the green slide) & white slides.  After debating whether or not I could live with it, I called BB just to check my options.  They said that was not a problem and to call back after 24hrs and they would send me another NIB ZT60 to replace this one.

My question is has anyone successfully done a NIB exchange with these guys in the last week or two?  With dwindling stock, I'd be surprised if they could actually pull it off.

Also, are dead pixels on this model common?  I searched "ZT60 dead pixel" and didn't mind much, so just wondering if I just had bad luck or not.

Thanks!

So set up the ZT60 using cnet settings to watch the Denver blowout yesterday and then watched some regular tv afteward. Picture sharp but when I look at the colors on the Kuro there is a huge difference. The reds and greens seem much more rich with the Kuro. Pinkness of faces nice and realistic with Kuro but dull with ZT60; not sure which settings to change to get better color rendition? Help!!!

Besides setting... let it age a bit...common experience as the PQ really picks up couple hundred hours in.
Check the settings faq above try the CNET (Edit : oops duh on me!) to start...

How many hours on the set? I noticed a difference between brand new and 100 hours, and from 100 to about 275-350. It gets better, trust me!

Thank you gentlemen - Superbowl was basically hours 1-3 - so we're talking brand new out of the box. Will take yours and Bvader's advise and look forward to improvemen. Appreciate the help.

Finally got my NIB 60" ZT60 delivered this morning aaand it has a dead pixel frown.gif Noticeable on the grey, green (though sometimes it turns on with the green slide) & white slides.

Thanks!
As with every plasma that's ever been manufactured, it's known to happen (unfortunately, I didn't notice the defective subpixel on mine until 3 months into ownership). Try searching for "stuck pixel" within this thread, or even "subpixel" for more discussion. If the pixel was truly dead, you would be seeing it on every slide and color rendition. Since you only see it on certain colors, it's most probably a case of a dead subpixel.

Pinkness of faces nice and realistic with Kuro but dull with ZT60; not sure which settings to change to get better color rendition? Help!!!

I've tried the CNET settings just for comparison purposes until I get calibrated, but on my display the CNET settings came across as dull and greenish in comparison to THX Cinema..

No wonder. smile.gif The panel goes through the most significant change in the first 300 or so hours.
