Ughhhhhhhhghghghghghggh.......damn that proprietary samsung driving method

I was hoping mll wouldn't go higher than 0.004 mll as determined at the 2013 shootout.
you have to remember, the driving method doesn't force blacks to go up(to .0023cd/m2 max on mine), it allows it to go deeper on the dim stuff.

if we use the latest numbers, and assume a best of .002ftl and worst of .009ftl. you'd have the choice between stable blacks at .009, or 'floating' blacks between .002 and .009.

I still think crt's provide the best blacks I've ever seen, and they floated a heck of a lot more than the f8500

I watched two back to back football games on my 8500 today and am now paranoid about doing so because of the static scores and scrolling bars. Anyone here watch football all day on Sunday with no retention?

full screen

When I watch regular TV I notice a lot of channels are not in full screen even if the settings in the menu are set at ''full screen''.
Is there any other way to force full screen images?

what is your source for tv?

by full screen I assume you mean 16:9?

about 90% of the channels I get right now are 4:3, totally pisses me off, but my cable box will automatically 'stretch' the 4:3 stuff to 16:9 and let the HD 16:9 stuff come through normally. it works well, except for the channels that broadcast 16:9 letterbox shows in the 4:3 format(black bars part of the 4:3 image). cause then my cable box just stretches them, and I get what looks like a 2.40:1 AR...

anyway, in the tv itself, you have little options to handle this. you can basically either stretch the image, or crop it. all of this controlled by 'picture size' in the menu. but if you're inputting the source(not using the built in tuner) those options may be reduced to not even allow that. I can only choose from screen fit, 16:9, and 4:3. not zooming or stretch options for me.

I accidentally left mine on overnight with avs forums displayed. does that count? haha.

I dunno, you might have 'better' channels than I do, but there's no way the football I've seen would cause IR. having commercials 40% of the time tends to wipe out any ir that may start to build up from the score/ticker...haha.

did you actually notice IR after watching your games? if not, I'm not sure why you'd be paranoid to do what you already did.

Its still ridiculous a plasma in 2013 is operating like a CRT from the 90's.....soo annoying...

contemporary as in new, recent measurements.
for example, on the ansi test pattern I measure .0023 cd/m2, which I think is just under .007ftl. so, there shouldn't be anything much higher than that anymore.

the ridiculousness is a point of view. I'm impressed plasma has manage to nearly match crt black levels while absolutely destroying them in ansi contrast. and I would MUCH rather have the blacks levels at .002ftl during dark scenes, so i'll accept the 'floating' as long as it remains unnoticeable to me.

I haven't had any noticeable IR watching football.

The set doesn't seem to be prone to IR at all. I have a tendency to nod off while watching TV and I've awoken to some static screen (Netflix, crackle, HBOgo) that have been displayed for a while, but when I exit them and check for IR I see none.

I guess every set could be different, though, so don't take my word as universal truth.

Got new PN64F8500 and love it, but have one question - is it possible to turn off that annoying volume control ticking? Could not find any settings for that.

Great example is gaming. I could not game on the 8500 without being frustrated with the input lag. The Panasonic input lag with game mode on is completely unnoticeable. The F8500 required game mode on + PC name and it still wasn't acceptable to me. That being said, the F8500 delivers a superb picture and I would've kept it if it wasn't for the vertical DSE and horizontal line right in the middle.
yes, same here. I got one of the last ZT65's as well. The fans make no noticeable noise at all. when I put my ear right up against them i detect a slight "whrrrr" sound that fans would typically make. as for overheating....when i touch the back of the unit around the edges, it feels slightly warm but that's it.

The blacks this thing produces still amaze me...

I just ordered a Samsung 51" F8500 for our reading room. It will be great to have possibly the last two best plasmas in the house.....

so sad...I was out on Panasonic's site today...so strange not to see the word "plasma" anywhere after all of those years.....

Let's ask a question, are you watching your F8500 for the programming, what ever it is, or are you watching the Specs?
Reminds me of many years ago when I attended an Audio get together, where everyone was oohhing and awwing the sound, saying how great it was! (Turns out, based on them reading an audiophile magazine touting the superior audio properties of said system.) Played some demo materials on the new system, then had them put their old system back in place, and replayed the same materials. Pointed out what their old equipment showed, versus what the new equipment didn't! Amazement amounst the group!
Believe what your eyes see, and your ears hear, not what some meter says, or magazine says. If you enjoying watching, and hearing what is being played, that's all that matters! If not, attend to the matter.

Does anyone know what improvements/fixes firmware v.1203 provides?

Tried to do the update over the weekend, but my "Software Update" link within the TV's menu is "grayed out".

Anyone know why it would be grayed out???

Thx in advance for any help.......

Wondering if anyone here who has the 60" can chime in on the front directional buzz.
Ive recently purchased this TV and sitting head on there is an audible buzz emanating from the screen. Off to the sides of the screen its barely noticeable. I sit 12 ft back and its audible even with audio on.

What Im wondering is if anyone has successfully replaced theirs with another that didn't buzz? I have a feeling they all have this buzz but some are more sensitive to it. In which case would a replacement make any difference? FYI Im coming from the C7000 plasma so Im quite familiar with the Samsung plasma buzz but this is much louder and direct.

What is the difference?

So as my luck with trying to buy the VT60 keeps getting lower and lower. I'm thinking on getting the Samsung before its also gone! What is the difference between Samsung PN64F8500 $ 2,205 and the PN64F8500AFXZA $ 3097.

http://www.niceelectronics.com/products.phtml?c=37

I was told by the company the first one is canadian made 2013 model and the second one is american and its the 2014 model?

Thanks!!!

no difference, buy the cheap one. this is a technique used by shady companies to 'scam' more money out of customers. good job on doing your research before getting on the phone with these guys to order! the only way to come out ahead with these kind of companies is if you already know everything you need to. can't trust them to answer any question truthfully... makes me wonder why people would even want to buy from them

I literally came onto this forum to post the exact same question about the 60f8500 from Nice Electronics, then luckily found this thread!

The 'Nice Electronics' guy on the phone said that the Canadian version (2013--AU-CA) was made in 2013 doesn't use a 'Samsung made Panel' (could be made by a 3rd party) while the 2014 US version does. He was saying that the 1 year manufacturers warranty is only valid for residents of Canada and that would not be valid in the US.

I'm assuming there's no truth to any of that? Just wanted to confirm they are the same, and then I'll be placing an order for this in the next hour or 2.

Thanks a ton for your help!!! I've heard such rave reviews for this TV, can't wait to have it setup in my Man Cave down in the basement.

This was discussed prior and was a tactic used by ectv as well. They are charging you more for a set that was built in 2014 (the only known difference). They will also probably try to get you to purchase the 2014 model at all costs since they make more money from you. You will also need to be prepared for the upsell. There are long threads in the deals Found section where you will find a relevant information

I'm lost in the blue nowhere.

If you Google: PN64F8500 Nice Electronics has it listed for the lower price. Their site says: free shipping but the no tax disclaimer is missing.

For an additional $47 you can get this panel from Abe's of Maine w/free shipping and no sales tax.

I don't know how good a reseller AoM is, but they have been selling PDPs w/the Internet for a long time.

I'd have more confidence doing business with them.

I purchased my 64F8500 from Cleveland Plasma and his site still lists this product in stock.

Cleveland Plasma / Extreme Electronics, LLC gets a 10 out of 10 from ResellerRatings

Abe's of Maine receives a 7.9 out of 10

Nice Electronics has a 6.94/10 rating.

We also fell for that "nice" trap... actually ordered the set, but then called to discuss... we received a dog and pony show about this panel, and that panel, asked us to pay more for "true US model" and so on.

We quickly cancelled the order.

it seems that most of the time, the lower price posted is never really available. they have figured out that if they list a super low price, that it'll show up when you search, and get's more customers to their site. once they have you, it's easier for them to upsell you to something that's basically the same price as all the competition. if they didn't 'suck you in' with the lower price, you'd never even think of buying from these less respected retailers.

sometimes ppl have managed out the door prices that were better than the competition, but most of the time they are just assuming it's better because they never even got a chance to haggle with the competition. with that though, I think these websites should be the last place you go. that way you've already gotten you 'best price' locally, and if they turn that 2200 dollar tv into a 2500 dollar tv, you'll know immediately if it's still a good deal or not.

I've heard such rave reviews for this TV, can't wait to have it setup in my Man Cave down in the basement.

well, I live in Canada, I bought one in 2013, and it's a US01 panel... so I'm going to say no truth to his statements.

My 51" 8500 says UW-01. I bought it at BBuy in California, April, 2013. Fabricated in beautiful Tijuana, Mexico...haha

Finally,officially joined the club,

My 60F8500 arrived today 10.30 am, delivered by Homedirectv Usa (Purchased from HSN) box arrived intact,I immediately took the top off and inspected the screen with a flashlight and no issues and then did a quick turn on and all is well.

I got a 2014 4 25 build US01 panel (Made in Mexico) I probably wont have time to set it up until the weekend as I work the graveyard shift.

I plan to put it in its lowest settings and break it in slowly with only widescreen content and then hire a pro after 300-500 hrs. even though I have a colormunki display and HCR and have enough practice calibrating, from doing so many on my GT30.

Costco has the squaretrade warranty for 3 yr addition for $89.00 so I plan to add this to it for added security.

Btw which is the lowest light output mode on the 8500,Relax or Standard with cell light low? Thanks.
