For what's it's worth to you, the purchase price I paid for the glorious 64PNF8500 you're helping me 'calibrate' was exactly the price advertised on ECTV's website.

Thanks for your good work and I look forward to reading your future posts.

Well, it seems my F8500 had a life-span of about 6 months. I went to power it on and I was met with a blank screen and some flashes from the red power light. Nothing I tried could wake it.

Has anyone encountered this one before? I've got a service tech coming later this week, but I expect it will need a significant repair or full replacement.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you purchased it from a legitimate dealer.

I guess I'm more annoyed at them because I know for every avs member that gets a good price, there's 10 other's who paid too much.

there's been a lot of rumours about the f8500 being on sale right now for 2199, and the sales staff telling ppl to wait because it's going to be 1999 soon. this is for the 64, so it seems that right now, there's a lot of opportunities to buy from other sellers, depending on your location of course.

ultimately, if you go in with a good amount of knowledge, you can come out just fine. it just bothers me that they straight up lie to try to get more money out of the less knowledgeable customers.

I'm sorry if I went too far, I am definitely biased against any company that behaves the way these 'grey market' sellers do. even if they do have the best prices

If one looks at the 'value added' part of the equation, I found the 'legitimate' dealers add very little to the value of a commodity.

anyway, in the tv itself, you have little options to handle this. you can basically either stretch the image, or crop it. all of this controlled by 'picture size' in the menu. but if you're inputting the source(not using the built in tuner) those options may be reduced to not even allow that. I can only choose from screen fit, 16:9, and 4:3. not zooming or stretch options for me.
Most of the channels I got are either 16:9 or get stretch by the ''screen fit'' option found in the settings of the TV. But sometimes movies playing at the Movie Network (or elsewhere) have letterbox and I cannot get the image to fill the entire display. The ''screen fit'' option does not do anything. Is it normal?

It is annoying because I dont want to watch letterbox movies and get some IR or burn-in. Maybe I'm just too paranoid?

PC richard and Best buy refuse to match any of those sites. None of them are authorized dealers for the Samsung. A floor model for the 60 inch is $2200, who is selling this new for that price in the 64 inch model? My WTB post panasonic still has 70 views, no replies!

sounds like the same issue I have. it's a 4:3 broadcast of a 16:9 movie(or 16:9 broadcast of a 2.35:1 movie) with the black bars as part of the signal. with mine, I don't have an option to crop the image(I do with my old Samsung plasma), and I think it's because of the hdmi. I have my old plasma upstairs hooked up via an analog video connection, and I'm able to zoom and crop stuff to fill the screen without stretching. with the f8500 and hdmi in, I can only select 4:3, 16:9, or screen fit. none of which do anything useful to get rid of the black bars, haha.

Fierece

Do you know if this price of $2199 64F8500 is for Canadian retailers as well? Not big box stores but the smaller ones?

I got a small dealer I go to and he said price was $2700 for the 64F8500. Too much?

Can anyone tell me the default values for the diagnostic screen you get when pressing mute 747 enter? I went in there to look at my hours and I am not sure if i changed anything.

Thanks.

My understanding is if you turn off the tv to exit the service menu without any other fat fingering, than the default values are preserved. The Mrt value on mine increased over the past week to 125, and the temperature reading was 36 Celsius last time I checked. I didn't log other values.

This thread has been derailed into a pricing discussion for which there is already a dedicated thread.

Perhaps I misremembered.

Hi BMCN,

Thank you for this info. Does anyone have any of the additional parameter values? I want to make sure all is as it was as my fingers were wandering.

Thanks again!

As a new owner, can I ask someone to point me at the service menu discussion? Hard to skim through all 7700 posts.

There were many discussions regarding the 8500's "service menu", but unfortunately, those discussions are spread throughout this thread. The best you can do to minimize the skimming of all the posts is to use the site's "search tool" and search with the string, "service menu" in this thread. That should narrow down the number of posts greatly.

Just a word of caution. You can brick your tv by activating the service menu and doing something unintentionally while in the menu. Be careful!!
