VARIOUS SETTINGS INFO.

a big THANK YOU for those sharing their hard work!

note that each set is individual and varies...plugging in someone else's settings may not produce good results.

user calibrated settings can be found at.... (will update this list as needed) (please also note the settings were all done at various times, with various firmware updates.)

TIPS, TRICKS, AND OTHER USEFUL STUFF.

Initial Break In With Out Slides: opinions vary on this so this is just what i did for the first 200 or so hours...

besides varying content/changed channels every hour or so, no channels with tickers across bottom, mixed in some full screen blurays, when viewing cable channels i used screen fit (sometimes zoom1 so logo would be mostly off screen) leaving NO black bars. zoom2 (while sleeping) so no logo on screen and on a channel that runs continuous shows, no infomercials. (hbo, cartoon network, are good) settings i used: cell light 15, contrast 65, brightness 45. also when runnung tv while sleeping: cell 12, contrast 55, brightness 40.

although, i will say, i think this is probably overkill. its just that this was my first plasma and i felt better doing this initial routine. would i be this cautious again? probably not!
just enjoy your beautiful new set

---if you are experiencing a 'dim' look to your set, try this eco bug trick. credited to member 'floridaman'
Under 'system', then 'eco solution', then 'eco sensor', turn the eco sensor 'on.' then adjust the 'minimum cell light' to 20. and then finally go back and turn the eco sensor back to 'off.' exit menus. you should notice a major difference in the brightness.
note to newer owners... this was a bug in the initial production runs. by now, 2014, you may not have this issue.

Thanks to F8500 I see many first time plasma owners in this thread. That itself says a lot about the potential of this TV and the plasma technology. I feel Samsung should keep producing plasmas for some more time. With F8500 Samsung is moving in the right direction. Making another version next year with even better PQ would be fantastic

Well not an official owner yet, but I just heard that my break-in period is going on and my unit should ship on the 7th and be to me in 2 business days. So early June I will have it in my house and I can't wait!!

I look forward to more great posts in this thread.

I am very glad to see this thread get started!

I am a happy new owner of the PN64F8500! I am coming from a Full array local dimming Toshiba Regza that had really nice blacks but quite a bit of blooming. This is my first Plasma so I am definitely in learning mode here.

I have been happily surprised at the picture quality, definition, shadow detail, skin tones, and whites. I pulled out Avatar 3D to give the 3D performance a test and was very pleased. My only previous experience with 3D on a TV was with a passive 3D set. The active image quality had loads of resolution. A very nice experience indeed.

After I get enough hours, I plan on dusting off the old Chroma 5 & i1one pro meters and giving a go at calibration. To my eye, the Movie mode in particular looks very close out of the box, to what it should be.

Thanks ljmart for getting this Owners Thread going.

Okay, I'm game for an 8500 owner's thread. I've been an owner for close to 2 months. Love the tv (a 51"). Ph8te, you're more than welcome to contribute anyway you can to this thread. You've been very helpful on the other 8500 thread as long as I've been active on it. Maybe one day you'll be an 8500 owner??

Just upgraded to 1104 from 1103. During the process, I got the "Optimizing System" message. So far, no change noticed.

Since I am a new Plasma owner and somewhat clueless on the tech at this point I have a question. Is there a particular advantage in viewing during break in with picture size at "16:9" rather than "screen fit" so that the pixel orbiter is engaged?

Michael

i used zoom1 so there wouldnt be any black bars AND pixel orbiter could be used.

Pixel orbiter is mostly mumbo jumbo.....Screen fit is the proper setting to watch TV in, during the break in period jsut watch a wide varit of programing and youll do OK. I would also avoid long periods (hours on end) of static images (TV "bugs", letterboz material, gaming).....

agree with ph8, screen fit is ideal and orbiter really doesnt help much. zoom just suggestion if you wanted to run orbiter

Our local Cable provider is not a "National" company and so far the HD content is rather limited, so I will use your zoom suggestion when I need to watch something that is in standard Def. Our local CBS affiliate broadcasts with a single line of white pixels showing vertically on the extreme left side of the screen. On that particular channel I will probably have to use 16:9. Other than that, Screen Fit all the way.
