There is a sticker on the back of the panel that tells you the build month; September and later the fans have had the foam fix applied although no one knows on whether Panasonic installed quieter fans as well.

Should be August and later actually, but it's still guesswork.

I want to prevent getting a VT60 with a build date earlier than September. Does anyone who bought a VT60 remember whether the serial number (not build month) is shown on the outside of the box? The Best Buy warehouse claims there is no way to identify the serial number without opening the box and they won't do that before delivering it. Most electronics I have purchased have S/Ns on the outside of the box, so I am skeptical of the answer.

jhersco,

The box with my 60VT60 had removable peel-off stickers with the serial number on them. There were three stickers one of which had been removed. When I asked the delivery person for the serial number before he took the unit off the truck, he simply tore off the remaining two stickers with the backing still on and handed them to me. Months before when I received my 65VT60 I did not ask and since then the box has been discarded.

On the box, the S/N will be on a white sticker with an small orange sticker on it. It will be MK3xxx... The three numbers after the 3 indicate the day in the year the was manufactured. From that you can figure out which month it was.

LarryinRI, p3Orion,
Thanks. I was fairly sure that the S/N would be there. I will try again with Best Buy to get this checked BEFORE they try to deliver to me.

Wouldn't we be able to tell if Panasonic installed quieter fans from pre-August vs post-August photos? I know several people posted pictures of the back panel of pre-August TVs.

There is no sticker with a month on it. Just a serial number. And the production origin. Czech.

But when I shine a light on the back I can see. Foam.... So that's a good thing.

I have a European model. And see several different serial numbers going by.
Starting with mk and fz.

On the North American tv's there's a S/N on the box and a sticker on the tv that has the S/N and month built. It's been that way for years.

Serial pattern for the ZTs is MK3[ddd][nnnn] where [ddd] appears to be the Julian Day and [nnnn] is the panel number for that day.

From what I have learned so far, until they can come up with an affordable OLED, they will be outsourcing panels on all their LCD's.

Are you sure you are seeing the fix foam and not the outside foam? With a July date I would expect you do not have the fix applied.

Tech coming out the 1st to apply the fix, 55VT60. Interesting, he said there was a recent tech advisory for VT and ZTs, to not try to move the display while the back is off. Evidently the panel can be easily damaged when the back is off. The back must be providing some support.

Guys, just got my 60" VT60 from Amazon with a June 2013 build date :(  Although the set is incredible, this is before the supposed fix.

What should I be on the lookout for? Is this a problem that worsens with time? Also, does Panasonic just come to your house to install the foam? Thanks!

"Is this a problem that worsens with time?"

No, it's immediately noticeable, and it's what you should be listening for (pulsating fan/air noise) that matters. wink.gif

"Also, does Panasonic just come to your house to install the foam?"

Yes.

For me, yes, because native contrast ratios, black levels, accurate color are more important than pixels at producing an accurate picture.

I like 4K as a concept that may drive larger screen sizes though.

Kind of like asking a Ferrari owner if he's still happy with his choice now that the new Tesla is out. Apples.. Oranges. Different technologies. LCD is still LCD. Let's keep this topic to the plasmas at hand.

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

4K is all hype right now. Almost every review states that the current plasma will likely out perform 4K for a while since all 4K sets will be LCD based for some time and thus have all the black level limitations of LCD. Also if you look at the various charts you have to sit within a few feet of a 4K set to see any of the resolution benefits, and then of course the big thing is there is no delivery of 4K content. I also find it odd that Netflix recently announced 4K content is coming, but really? Their current HD content is not even BD level so why send out 4K.

Reversing the sheaths for the fans may reduce vibrations from the fan motors but it will also change the airflow which might lead to increased heat.
Also I would not cover the air vents, there is a reason why they made those vents that large.

Good luck.

Just picked up the washers, going to ask the tech to add them Tueaday when he comes out to put the official foam fix on. Thanks for the info.

It's only a 55 inch @ 1920 x 1080p for.... wait for it... $8,500.

I don't understand why it needs to be curved either and that seems to be the selling point on BB page. First it was thinner TV's, then 3D and now curved???

The OLEDs may have a better picture down the road but at this point, all I see is the marketing departments creating hype around the tech to make people think they NEED it and they are living in the past without it. Not surprisingly this works on people with more money then sense.

Panasonic and Sony just virtually bailed on the tech. LG and Samsung are the only ones keeping it afloat in the marketplace, and they only shipped a thousand units this year, all curved and 55". The point at which these sets reach parity in pricing with today's panel's continually gets pushed back because of poor yields, as does the predicted number of shipped units. Would you please stop dragging this thread off-topic?
