Any ideas what's causing this? Started an hour ago and it's spreading the longer TV is switched on.

Any info would be gratefully appreciated

Attached picture shows patch as brown but it's really black and rest of picture is ok

Minute crack in the plasma panel causing gas leakage. Not repairable. Call Samsung; known defect with these panels is sudden unexplained cracking, sometimes on the edge. Panel replacement required.

Thanks for your response

Black area now covering half screen and spreading

Set is 3 years old so at what point (age-wise) will Samsung say that it's not covered although it's as you say a known defect

I don't know if they'll replace it. Most panels had problems after around 6 to 18 months. If you get to Samsung Executive Support, you may get a discounted repair (pay labour only, around $200 to $300 for a panel swap is going to be typical.) You may even get a free repair, if you can argue the point well. But Samsung have never been great at after care. That being said, neither have Panasonic...
