Plain and simple: I have a vintage 2006 Mitsubishi WD-57732 57" DLP that has served its people well and now deserves a proper retirement. I am looking at getting a plasma for the new apartment (small 10x18 room) with an unknown viewing distance until we move in. I'm looking at the 50" Panasonic P50S60 for it's great reviews and low input lag (for video games). It will be primarily used for streaming video, watching Blu-Ray movies, and of course video games. I do NOT care about on-board speakers, the number of inputs (it is being hooked up to a receiver) or it's capabilities beyond producing a fantastic image.

My biggest worry is viewing distance. I'm at 9 feet give or take with my 57" DLP from a time when Facebook was invite-only. I'm wondering if a new 50" plasma will be about equal or (hopefully) better at about the same distance. I would go 60" or 65" if the prices were more incremental - but they seem OUTRAGEOUS for the size increase. I am looking at open-box options in the 60" range....

Any thoughts?

I will add that I am a Costco member, and it seems they have a model specific to them? The S64?

60" sounds right to me. There's another thread floating around where I explain I have a 7 ft/ 8 ft viewing distance for my 59" screen, and I really would not have minded if I went with the 64" model.

You mention going from a 57 inch to a 50 inch, I would hope it would not be something you may regret. I just moved up from a 46 inch to a 65 inch and so far no regrets. Almost went with a 60 inch as when the wife seen the tv's in the showroom she thought the 65 incher was to big for our 8 foot seating distance. Now that it is in our home we are both happy and the ole 46 inch replaced our 27 inch crt in the bedroom. Yes she did think that would be to big to go in there also biggrin.gif All I know is now I don't think I could downsize. Hope you can find a good deal on a 60 or 65 inch display.

Thanks for the input. I'm trying to be sensible and not spend a small fortune - I just don't want to downgrade. I guess my bigger question looming overhead is: has the picture quality on a new plasma increased to the point that my old 2006 DLP (despite being 7" larger) is substantially inferior?

It's also going to take some convincing the gf that viewing distances of 60/65s are NOT 15' or more back (like most families put them).

I've never gone smaller yet. the closer I could say was my first plasma was a 50" that replaced our 46" RPTV. in all honesty, that almost felt like it was smaller, since the tv was about 2feet thinner, it ended up placing the screen about 1.5feet farther away.

personally, i'm not a fan of under buying. I think there's nothing more frustrating than going too cheap, and then a month later looking at the extra money in your bank account and wishing you could trade it for the better tv.

I think the reason 50's are so cheap is because they are considered too small for a main display these days.

I hate to say it, the plasma's might still be inferior in some ways. I know it wasn't until I bought the Samsung f8500 this year that i'd seen a plasma I thought looked better than my old hitachi CRT RPTV

send your gf into the front projector forum for about 5mins. after hearing guys talking about 'needing' to get a bigger screen because they aren't happy viewing 110" screens from 10feet away, she might cut you a break tongue.gif

Can't tell if serious...

Plan B is just take the old girl (57" DLP) to the new place and either wait to get a 65 or something seriously good around Xmas/new year - or take the plunge at the end of September for the 60" S60 model range.

Yup, I'd just wait until you feel comfortable with spending the money for a 60" or even 65" panel. From 57" down to 50" is something you'll probably regret pretty quickly. Doesn't seem like a good long-term solution to go 50".

Plan C is to purchase it with a financing option. At Best Buy I believe I could split the payment up into 36 months.

Strangely enough that's still just under $100 a month.

Not a bad idea! I'm one of those "have ONE credit card and pay it off every month" type - never had a store credit card. I might go this route with HH Gregg or Best Buy and do the 1 year payment route. Thanks for the idea!

yeah, but they haven't been 'available' for almost as long tongue.gif

there's really about 4 TV's on the market i'd take over a good crt, the f8500, st60, vt60, and zt60. but I have a feeling there might be one or two full array leds I would like if I had to chance to view as well as the kuro

i'm dead serious. my CRT RPTV started 'degrading in picture quality' like 5yrs ago, so I bought my first plasma(Samsung b530) and was pretty much disgusted by how much worse it looked. considering I was buying a new tv because the CRT was no longer performing well, and the new tv was far far worse, I kind of gave up on the flat screen thing. I know now a lot of it was buying a cheap model and expecting it perform like a high end one, but I kept an eye on TV's since then and never really found one that 'wow'd me' until this year.

there are certainly a lot of things plasmas do better. I just find the lack of black bothers me far more than any of CRT's issues. the best plasmas released this year are so close to crt blacks, the only thing I still miss is not having input lag. I mean, I already suck at COD, but now i'm hopeless, haha.

I guess I kind of feel like those old guys trying to convince teenagers how much better vinyl sounds. I just hate that 'digital look' of a display that doesn't have enough gradation to make clouds, or shadows, or smoke etc look normal. again, I think the f8500, vt60, and zt60 do manage to display those things about as well as I remember crt's(my hitachi finally blew this past april)

bottom line, I certainly wouldn't expect the 'average' flat panel to be a huge improvement. i'm not sure how much difference there is between the s60 and st60 because I don't know if they sell the s60 in Canada, but I felt the st60 was the 'worst' I wanted to go. not to say it was terrible, I couldn't really see much difference between it and the vt60 in stores, I just knew I wanted a 'reference' quality display this time around.

I don't want to scare you away from an upgrade, the s60 or st60 is definitely worth looking at. I just don't want you to make the assumption I did, that all plasma's would be an upgrade, cause they won't.

just don't end up like my friend who bought a new 64" Sammy last year and then couldn't afford to buy 20dollar 3D glasses unless they put it on the same payment plan...

the fact that you're on here researching I already know you're smarter, but it bothers me who dumb some ppl can be with money. I don't like doing that with electronics, you end up having obsolete gear that's not even paid for yet. I prefer buying stuff at end of year clearance and have the money to upgrade sooner.

^I'm not much better than your friend right now (I think the Kuro spoiled me when it comes to the unprecedented reality of owning a panel that didn't reach obsolescence until the 5th year). redface.gif

I use cards similarly, but I'm unfortunately also spread pretty thin right now (fortunately, the balances are on cards with 0% APR promotions lasting through 2015).

Good deal. And thanks for the write-up on your tube set. I 'get' vinyl - I just can't afford it yet. But I also know that digital has come a long way fast and is now blowing most analog out of the water. Plus, I moved a huge CRT TV once... never again!

I love finding a good deal and hate paying full price for something like a TV, a car, or anything where the sales guys come running at me like a scene out of "300." (Girlfriend and I are about to buy a mattress and TALK ABOUT A SCAM BIZ)!

But I digress... The TV situation looks like it will be on hold for a bit unless I come across a screaming deal and can either finance it for a year - or wait until year end sales and snag one. My move-in date couldn't come at a worse time- Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming out that EXACT same week!

I'm at around 7 feet and I got a 60". It's plenty big but I would have gone for the 64" had it not been 40% more expensive.

Is this the wrong place to ask when all the good sales normally start? I won't discuss specific locations/prices, but I always thought Thanksgiving had some killer deals.

They often won't lower TV prices of the top tier models, but they'll throw in some bundles (Blu-ray player, glasses, smaller TV, included stand or soundbar, etc.).

I can`t even get comfortable watching movies at 10.5 feet away on a 60``, 11 feet eye distance wise seems like the sweet spot for me.

Is the S60 a top tier model? Really? I thought I was buying mid-grade coke here, er.... TV.
