Brand new to soundbars and have a problem.

I recently bought a Panny S60 series plasma and was unhappy with the tv sound so I went yesterday and bought the LG3530 SB. I'm feeding the tv from a DirecTV Genie via HDMI, then to the LG using the optical out, the only connection that the LG offers.

The LG sounds fine and the subwoofer plays. It supposedly can decode DD and DTS but when I put on a recorded movie from HBO that says broadcast in DD5.1, the LG INFO says PCM2 0.0.

I've tried both HDMI inputs on the tv, Turned the Genie DD on and off and changed HDMI cables and nothing helps.

The Genie doesn't have a toslink optical output but does have a coax, or I would go directly to the LG, bypassing the tv.

Any help would be really appreciated.

That is normal behavior for anything that is not internal to the tv(ota or internal apps), only 2 channel is passed for external sources, if you want 5.1 from your DVR you will have to go directly from your Genie to your soundbar

Ok, thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I only need 2.1 as that's all the soundbar is capable of. I guess that I could hook up an old AVR with the coax from the Genie and then send Toslink to the LG soundbar.

Do you think this (Dolby Digital) would be a big improvement or small/nothing at all over the current PCM?

Thanks again.

For a soundbar the difference is minimal imo, does your soundbar have virtual surround technology ?

Yes, it has something called 3D surround.

I found a converter box (coax to toslink) from Monoprice for $15 including shipping, so I have that option.

I'm happy with the sound, it's nice and clear, but I was just wondering if I was missing much not having DD. And I believe you answered that for me.

Thanks so much.

Dolby Digital is compressed 500kbit/s on 6ch so compared to PCM it is actually "worse" though the difference may well be inaudible to 99% of people.
