My projector died and I am looking to replace it with a TV. Based on the following criteria, it is looking like a Samsung PN60F5300 may be my best choice. The other TVs I was comparing it to are all LEDs, which I will link at the end, just in case.

While it will be used for television and movies, its primary purpose is for video games. I will also be hooking up my PC to it for games.

1. My limit is $1,000.

2. It needs to be able to handle 1080p at 60 FPS with no issues.

3. Viewing distance is easily adjusted in my setup, so this isn't a factor.

4. It will be used in a room covered in blackout curtains.

5. I don't care much about 3D and couldn't care less about "smart" functionality. Every device hooked up to this TV will have all the streaming and media options I need.

6. The TV will not be mounted, but will be sitting on a table.

7. The bigger, the better (without sacrificing quality).

8. I have a surround setup, so the quality of the TV's speakers does not matter.

So does the Samsung PN60F5300 seem like the best option for me? I always read conflicting stuff about burn-in (whether it is still an issue in modern plasmas, etc). Games will be played on this thing a LOT.

I was also looking at LEDs, but I think with my room being covered in blackout curtains, plasma may be the better choice.

Yes the 5300 (5350 warehouse version) is your best bet. i like your idea on covered wall as its bet for plasma in a darken room. gaming on the 5300 is awesome ( i would use game mode and lower the contrast and brightness . but use standard settings when you watching zoomed in movies . I would watch movies whole week non stop on normal settings ( the more time you age the panel the less Image Retention you'll see if any ) i am a heavy gamer and i do not notice difference from this model to the elite pro-111 to the px75u.

Thanks for the reply! Just a quick question. When I was looking up places to buy this from, I came across a review from *******************.com (Plasma TV Buying Guide) that said:

Quote:
Plasma TVs are usually recommended as gaming TVs, but Samsung's plasmas has a hard time with input lag. Even with the Game Mode enabled, our tests showed input lag at anywhere between 70 and 100ms on the PN60F5300. That measurement wasn't much better than with theGame Mode off. It didn't make playing Okami HD on the Playstation 3 unbearable, but I definitely notice the lag. Gamers who mainly play First Person Shooters will notice it even more, and will probably want to look elsewhere for a gaming set. The Game Mode can be found here in the menus: System > General > Game Mode.

How accurate/big of a problem is this? This is a big concern since the main purpose of the TV is for games. It's the only thing I've read that mentions any issues with video games.

Edit: displaylag.com says the average is 47ms.

Edit2: Looking at this forum's official input lag thread, it seems this TV is comparable to other newer plasmas in regards to input lag, and I'm not a professional fighting-game player or anything, so I think I'll go ahead and get this TV.

Anyone have this problem with an HDMI AVR? (Yamaha RX-V373)

Plugging a device directly into port 1 or 2 corrects the problem.

Want to replace my Samsung HP-T4264 in the play room for a 51f5300. Hope it's not a stupid question. But, am I going to see a big difference in picture quality? Sharpness, detail, contrast from 8-10 feet away? Used for movies and a Wii u.

Does anyone else hear a random clicking that sounds like it comes from behind the set? It's pretty random and I didn't know if it's at all related to the ferrite core I attached to the power line or if it's just internal components "breaking in". The clicks are infrequent and random as far as I can tell. Sounds like you are turning it in and off but there's no picture or sound effect.

I also had the set sort of jump the signal on me just once. I was using an HDMI port and watching Netflix on apple TV. It just flashed for a second (maybe clicked, can't remember) and then immediately came back with the info banner displayed on the screen.

About the signal jumping-- if the resolution of the content changed, the set will "jump" and display the new resolution. This happens on retro games when you get an in game switch between 240p/480i. If your device switches from 720p to 1080i or p on the fly, this will happen.

It DOES change in bright scenes, as it reduces the agressiveness of the ABL. On darker/normal scenes, if ABL is not kicking in, you wont see any difference. If ABL is annoying you, set it to 20 for a while and see how much you notice it. If you have a PC hooked up you should be able to see the change from 16 to 20 when displaying a nice snow/winter full screen picture with lots of white and clear blue sky. Try it. On my F4500 it almost completely eliminates ABL.

So I'm noticing some magenta/pink push on the right half of my screen now. It's mild, but can be noticed on white scenes and especially with a gray screen. Not really bad, but once you've seen it..... Should I exchange the set? I've read some about this is just being due to incoming power and the way the boards in the set are tweaked. I'm wondering if I can get a Samsung tech to tweak the panel just a bit to get rid of it or if that is not even worth considering. So back to Best Buy or call Samsung?

Help?

Went ahead and filed for service with Samsung. They probably won't be able to match up with my schedule, so I'm anticipating maybe an exchange with BB.

So Samsung gave me the usual circus runaround to get a real service request in. Long story short, the company they contracted to come out wouldn't match up with my work schedule until September! Anyway I'm thinking of returning it to Best Buy this weekend, although I don't think I can fit everything in my car and used a truck the first time. The set definitely pushes pinkish on the right side, it's a little hard to capture on camera but I can notice it with normal content that has a white background. It's a shame, the left side produces an extremely white "white", while contrasting this with the right side it looks pinkish.

I'm really too lazy to go through this again, but it may bother me enough to go ahead and exchange.

Would someone else please check their 5300 set? A good check is just the scrolling IR protection screen from the menu. As it rolls right to left, look at the white edges and compare on different parts of the screen. The reason I ask is because I watched another 5300 set 60" at BB and it too pushed pink on the right half ever so slightly.

Update: It looks like (and I' completely guessing here) that the blue subpixel on the right side maybe isn't quite as prominent as the left and that is creating the pink push. This is just with the naked eye. Does this indicate just a volt adjustment to the panel will change anything?

I just purchased one last weekend and I believe I am starting to notice a pink shift on the bottom right corner. I have been using the bread-in DVD and am up to about 65 hours. I hope to hit 100 over the weekend since I'm still within my 15 day return policy at Best Buy. If it continues to turn pink and is not just my imagination since I have been really looking for it I think I will just get my money back and live with my 42" Panny for now.

There seems to be a lot more talk of pink screens on the 60" Pentile model than on the 51" or the 64" non-Pentile models. I've had two 51" F5300s recently (returned one due to a faulty blue sub-pixel and some screen uniformity issues) and neither of them had pink screen issues.

I'd say all sizes are being discounted to clear out inventory and put plasma in the rear view mirror.

Just got the 51" of this, so far so good, no pink. Have the B model 3/14. One question though...I have it hooked up to my HTPC and the only resolution that it seems to be compatible with is the 1600x900 at 60hz. If i set 1920x1080 on the PC, it is too large to fit on the TV screen. Anyone else notice this?

EDIT: Nevermind, solved it.

I thought that too but the more I ran my TV the more it started to show up. Run the break-in DVD for a while and it will start to show up. The most noticeable scene for me is off the intro to The Art of Flight off the Reference Bass disk 2 here on AVS forum. With all he bright white snow, it makes it really obvious.

I'm strongly considering picking up this TV before plasma goes away for good. My main concern is this pink issue, as I have seen it crop up quite a bit. Just how widespread is it?

Well I just got back from returning my TV at best buy. I am very sad to see it go. The picture is absolutely gorgeous. Blows my old 42" panny out of the water. However knowing that the pink was there was a deal breaker for me. If I had never heard of the issue and I wasn't looking for it I probably would never have known about it. That being said, after staring at a white screen for hours on the Samsung, putting the same screen up on my old Panasonic really made me realize how not uniform the Samsung display really was.

If you're never going to calibrate the display you might be OK however once you know its there its hard to atop looking for it in everything.

Picked up an open box 60F5300 yesterday and plan to run break in slides. Have a ZT but 2012/2013 Panasonics will show IR a little easier than the older plasmas my buddies have (thanks to me). Panasonic and Samsungs announcements each drove me to buy a TV, what a shame!!!

I game a lot and wanted a cheaper, but good looking set for gaming/sports.

wow really? This is the exact situation I am in now. I have a Panny th-42pz77u, for umm 7 years now and I created a thread earlier comparing this TV.. It sounds like this redding is happening pretty often? Did you find that the panasonic was still better in terms of picture?

As far as uniformity, no. The Samsung display had some banding and wasn't as uniform across the display. However under normal viewing conditions it blew my old Panasonic away. It just bugged me that I knew it was there.

I am pretty sure i have a pink band on my TV, on the bottom... not sure if I care though. This TV will be for FIFA, Mario Kart, and Smash brothers haha.
