CRTs are brighter than Plasma TVs. If Plasma TVs were as bright as CRTs, they'd be sellin'.

My Plasma is actually brighter then my CRT, which I still have in my home office, since it has very little mileage on it.

Interesting, I wonder if Samsung can jack up the briteness on plasmas, without hurting reliability. We shall see at CES time if they will continue to do this.

So is mine and it is much larger only about 4" thick and doesn't weigh over 200lbs
what's not to like in that comparison?

The Soviet people feared the KGB was watching them through their TV's ........or listening to them through their radios, so they kept them turned off often when they wanted privacy .

Now the NSA/ DHS are in fact watching us with our computers cell phones surveillance cameras drones, satellites etc !

Anyone think that the VT60 will still be available around Christmas?

I'm starting to debate if I should save the next month or two and expand my budget from $700 (S64, but can't find one now..) to about $1600 for the 55" VT60.

I'd buy now. From what I've heard Panasonic has fired a bunch of staff related to plasma sales and no more product is coming. What's left in inventory is probably all we'll see (as a reseller). The major Panasonic distributor we buy thru has deleted the 50 and 60ST60 from their website. They have less than 20 55 and 65ST60 available. VT and ZT are available but not in huge quantities.
I could never figure out why Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung, etc. never promoted the benefits of plasma vs other display techs. While the net can be a great resource for info their is a lot of bs being passed off as gospel. A weak economy coupled with people's perceptions that almost all consumer electronics come out of the same Chinese factory make selling premium audio/video product a very difficult task. When it comes to CE most people say "it's good enough" no matter what their income level. I knew the TV business was heading for the crapper a long time ago but when you see a Vizio TV in a multi million dollar home it makes one cry. The really sad part is TV's are far cheaper and better quality than they were 3 or 4 years ago and people still complain about the pricing.

Wow, so that's going to come quick then.. thanks for the info.

I'm not really in a position where I can drop $1600, going on a trip in a few weeks so I was hoping to save some up on the Christmas bonus.

I might end up having to do an LED, despite preferring Plasma for the motion and contrast.

It all comes down to the fact the ST60 shipped out with 75ms of input lag but the S60 is far too reflective for my situation. Unfortunately I missed the boat by about a month or two on the S64, which would have been my perfect model. In fact I had one on order from Newegg (refurb) and they cut my order.. was never meant to be..

Samsung doesn't offer a real good ST60 competitor, and the VT60 is a bit out of my current budget and going going gone..

+1 to avguy1272.

I don't own a multi-million dollar home but I do budget for premium devices for my modest home theatre. This weekend I'll be finally upgrading my old TCP54V10 to a TCP65ZT60 (found a dealer with one in stock...currently being held for me) and it'll match up nicely with my Oppo 103D that I just got. The old plasma will be moved to the kids playroom. Yes a HUGE TV for the kids. But why sell a perfectly good TV, right?

Eric

My Stuff: Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 w/  Ideal-Lume Bias Lighting, Yamaha RX-V3800, Oppo BDP-103D

I'd wait and save. If you can't afford the VT now then just save and see what is available when you have sufficient funds for the TV you truly want. If every Panasonic in the country is gone then so be it(yet Kuro's still somehow show up in 2013 new on ebay)

Who knows what Samsung has up their sleeves in 2014?

I flip flop about daily on it, but honestly the basic reality is the main reason I want the VT60 over the S60 is the AR filter and lack of input lag the ST60 has.. oh and so I can say "Oh yeah that TV.. just one of the flagship models in the last year for Pansonic Plasmas".. hard to justify an extra grand for that. I'm not really a videophile, though I like to think I can appreciate the difference.

I'd say a third of my viewing on this TV will be sports, another third TV/movies, and the next third games.

At the exact same time it's hard to justify spending $850-$900 on a S64 with an extra warranty knowing the ST60 is there for a ~$50-$75.

Why did they have to cheap out on that damn processor, it probably would have cost a few bucks more to cut off 30ms of input lag.

A few bucks more multiplied by thousands of units suddenly isn't so minor anymore, especially since Panasonic has lost billions on their display division.

No doubt, every little thing adds up when it's that kind of scale but even if they had to charge the cost + profit on it I think most people wouldn't care if a ~$1000 TV cost a few bucks more for a better CPU.

It's a sad day when the front runner gets pushed into extinction for really no good reason

Sony Trinitron, Fujitsu plasmavision, Pioneer Kuro, Sony XBR, Sharp Elite and now Panasonic.. did I miss anyone?

I would just point out that the Sony XBR is not dead - this year you had the Sony XBR900.

Perhaps, but it's only a shadow of its former self, yes, with the sacrifice of full-array tech?

Have had my first Panny plasma for 9 years @ 50" - no problems or regrets and it looks better than most TVs I see now.  I was going to wait to pull the trigger on a 65" S60 (Costco @ $1299), ST60, VT60 or ZT60.  After research and seeing that there may be little if any more production, along with so many AV shops running "Black Friday" deals ALL of November, I decided not to wait and miss out on the inventory.  Also decided that the ZT60 was the way to go.

Went to the local Best Buy with iPad in hand, pulled up the current (11/10/13) deal for Paul's TV and East Coast TVs for a ZT60 @ 65" and it was $2899 w/ free shipping.  After some "let me talk to the manager" questions, Best Buy matched it for $2899 with free delivery to my house, 24 months no interest on the BB card.

Act quickly if you are on the fence.  YMMV.

My biggest concern is actually the warranty issue with plasma tvs.

As plasma exits the market, would it be more and more difficult to repair or find parts for the TVs if there's any issue?

You will still be able to get VT and ZT in January. I just wouldn't plan on much longer than that. Also, don't expect a sweetheart deal. Retailers have zero incentive to mark them down. Inventory is tight and demand has increased.

Is Panny still making the ST? Are they going to stop making them in march or whenever they want to be out? How long do we have to buy one before its going to be hard to get?

I don't think that will be an issue.  there are a bazillion of these floating around in the US and I am sure the parts will be available.

fwiw, I have had my Panasonic TH-50PX50U since September of 2004 and the picture is as good as ever.  had some fan buzzing the first month and it was fixed by Panasonic.

literally no issues in almost 10 years since then.  I am not worried and at $2.9k it is not the end of the world if I enjoy it for five years and then get stiffed on parts.

I am not sure, but I wouldn't risk it and wait, that's why I pulled the trigger now.

I don't know if the deals will get better or if it will be around, but I figured getting a ZT60 @ 65" now at $2,899 was a good deal with the piece of mind that I have it before it disappeared.

$2,899 is a GREAT deal. I doubt you'll see them drop uch lower than that, at least until the displays are being sold.

That deal is fantastic for a 65" ZT60, here in Canada they are asking 5K! eek.gif I would totally jump on that sweet deal.

This past Friday, I got around to picking up a 65ZT60. Yes, I'm in Canada and yes, it retails for $4999 up here. Though, not as cheap as the $2899 USD the one guy got but I got mine for $4100 CAD. I highly doubt that it will go on sale in Canada at all. As well, I suspect I got one of the last ones in Alberta.

Sounds like a good deal.  No U.S. retailers are allowed to ship to you for a conversion exchange fee or something like that?

Can't you just buy it at Best Buy in Kalispell or Spokane and drive it back or will customs NAFTA you or make you pay a duty fee?

Hard to believe Panny plasma are on their way out.. Kinda sad, it'll be different if it was that oled or a better tech over took it at the same prices but that's just not the case.

I don't have the TV yet, but if you google some of the reviews I believe you will find that the VT and ZT have less lag from what I recall.
