TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Panasonic Corp has decided to pull out of the plasma television panel business by the end of the current financial year in March 2014, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters on Wednesday.

Panasonic had been expected to exit the struggling business, although the move was sooner than some analysts had predicted. Several hundred employees in the plasma operation are expected to be deployed to other parts of the company, the sources said.

With the closure of its sole plasma panel factory in western Japan, Panasonic will book an impairment loss of more than 40 billion yen ($413 million) on its last remaining factory building in operation, the sources added.

Panasonic said in a statement that it continued to consider various options for the plasma display panel business but that nothing had been decided yet.

($1 = 96.9500 Japanese yen)

Both surprised and not surprised if this is true. I thought we'd at least get some refreshed models for 2014, but I guess not. Get your ZTs and VTs while you can! Hope my VT50 lasts...

I am picturing some really, really steep price cuts for black friday for Panasonic's TVs...

Well most of us with 50s or 60s should do fine until a good Panasonic OLED comes along at a decent price.

seriously WTF. Why do the panels with the best picture and tech keep dying? Pioneer and now Panny Plasma? I don't even understand.

We have heard these reports for the past few years. If they show up at CES with no new models, then we will know if this is true. I doubt they would introduce new models in January if they are getting out of the business in March.

I was going to wait until the 2014 models but looks like there won't be any. Now I have to quickly decide which 2013 model to get before they're gone forever.

I was at Best Buy yesterday checking out the TVs and they display LCDs and Plasmas in the same area, and honestly the brightness difference alone is going to have people misjudge them.. especially on those static images with a lot of white they display quite a bit.

The LCDs were boosted to max brightness and such as well..

Then try asking a question about it, I bet they'll try to steer you to an LCD. It's easier to sell, probably support, and deal with.

So it's become a niche, a decent niche it seems, 3DTV prolonged Plasmas life a bit longer because they were able to do 3D at a significantly lower price.. now that 3D is more common and less in demand that's not a feather in the cap anymore..

No salesman has ever recommended a plasma.
It's no wonder they aren't selling.

RIP Plasma
Long live OLED

^No salesman...is that a fact?

Ahem...I've said it about 5 times now, but Nikkei isn't the most reliable when it comes to truth in reporting.

Worse yet, that article says nothing about OLED, so it would be unwise to give it too much credence.

Because most consumers are too cheap and clueless and buy whatever garish crap the stores have on the end caps. It's all junk LCDs and useless LEDs. Whatever...I just keep clinging to my five year old KURO which still embarrasses most modern TVs.

Just sad though.... Great job, everyone. rolleyes.gif

Whoops, I meant to add *"to me since 2005".

I don't see Nikkei sourced. It says "sources close to us [Reuters].
Why would it need to say something about OLED?

What a shame. Sure hate to hear this. The uninformed consumer just buys the cheapest and brightest "torch mode" panel in the store.

I just hope that my TC-P65V10 keeps on keepin' on . . .

Best regards,
Lloyd C.

If true, this is big and disappointing news. I had thought for sure we'd get a 2014 lineup and likely 2015 as well. Any idea when Panasonic is planning to release its first OLED?

That's good, but how long before we can get OLED at the cost of current plasma? I would think at least 5 years.

I was buying a TV in store recently and the poor old ST60 was tucked away in the corner. The salesman told me he struggles to sell any when put next to the best LEDs as most consumer simply see a less appealing dim picture versus the eye-popping LED's.

Reminds me of the Betamax demise against the inferior VHS!

Better get used to LED...

The price of the 60ST60 is the same as it have been for a couple months ($1499). Not sure about the other models and sizes.

Guess I better keep my eyes glued to Best Buy, Amazon, Fry's, etc for whenever they decide to clearance them out. Have had the P65ST60 in my sights for a little while and have just been waiting for a sale. Might come quicker than I expected.

could Samsung pick up the torch and lead the plasma market for at least a year or two? or will it too exit the plasma market soon after Panasonic? If they could offer more options between the F8500 and the much cheaper models (F5500/F5300) and fix the issue with floating blacks, maybe good plasmas could stay around for a few years.

I don't understand why people who squint at a picture because of brightness think that is a sign of better?! Exasperated.

Samsung wants to be all things to all people - we can certainly hope for the best to preserve the Plasma legacy.
