Happy Holidays,

My 2011 Panasonic 55GT30 went bad, 3 boards need to be replaced per the tech (7 blinking lights of death). The warranty company wants to replace the device instead of fixing. They have offered the SAMSUNG PN60F5500AFX. While the reviews of PQ seem good, it really does not seem like they are giving me the same quality. The reviews all compare the Panasonic S60 and ST60. While the unit is bigger, that does not matter to me, I actually prefer the 55 inch. I need to provide them a reason why I am denying the Samsung, I advised them already that I have read negative reviews of the Pentile pixel mapping for the 60 inch Samsung. What pixel mapping did my GT30 have? I guess under my agreement I have to argue whether their comparison is not sufficient. What other recommendations can I make to get a better device?

My opinion is it is a downgrade, your panel is definitely not pentile. The 5500 has floating blacks and very basic picture controls. The ST60 would be the equivilent set in this years model line, in fact is is the equal of the 2012 VT50 in most pq categories. I wouldn't take the Samsung if it were me.

I have a 55GT30 and I have a Square Trade warranty up to 2016 and if mine ever kicks the bricks before I have a chance to upgrade or sell it,or just pass it on to another room,I would demand a 60ST60 or a 55VT60 (if your a smooth talker) from the warranty replacement.

It is an inferior set period:

1. Pentile display
2. No THX modes
3. Floating Blacks
4, Fewer HDMI ports ?

Are they just looking to pay out the approx amount you spent on your GT30 ?

They will not replace the parts based on it being more expensive than a new TV. The customer service representative stated I needed to provide what features the new set doesn't have compared to my old one. That is a hard one to fight, as far as "features". Now, I can see no THX modes and 1 less HDMI being features. I rejected the offer, now I need to see how hard they are going to push.

But I would argue to give me a 55VT60 as I have a GT with THX and it is suppose to be superior to the ST equivelent from that year.

And since there are no US GT models for 2013,I would say the UK people have a GT version for 2013 and it is on par more or less with the NA VT and superior to the UK ST.

So a 55VT60 should be a goal I would strive for or settle for the 60ST60.

Or just ask for a full refund or amazon/best buy credit gift card.

No offense Peter but an ST60 is comparable to the VT50 from last year, so either is a pretty significant upgrade from the GT30. But I agree if he can get a VT60 he should.

My warranty covers me for $1,400 and I see the 60ST60 or 55VT60 (if you look hard) can be had for that price more or less.

So If mitch as any issues with any of the above models considering how much is his payout he has a valid argument.

If they hassle to much ,just ask for a full refund and or amazon/best buy gift card for full amount.

I would push them for a 55st60 at minimum. The Samsung is definitely not an equivalent replacement.

My 50GT50 has "1080P Pure Direct" feature. In fact I exchanged my new ST50 for GT50 just for that specific feature. Does your GT30 have that feature, as well?

Why don't they offer a GT60 as replacement? If stock of GT60 isn't available, then VT60 would be the logical replacement.

I just spoke to the warranty department (3rd party). They will only deal with the B&M store that I purchased the device from. There is no cash option available. I will now need to wait for the replacement department to re-evaluate my claim. The problem I have is the decline of Plasma's being sold at this B&M. It looks like their options are very limited. Their dilemma I am sure is all of the other models are either way too expensive or way under what my TV is worth. The repair would have cost them aprox $650 but because my warranty would continue for over a year they don't want to risk being out more money and would rather replace the whole tv and be void of any warranty. Crazy! Here is what is being sold at the B&M.

From that list the lowest one i would accept is the TC-P60VT60. Insist that "you need the THX Mode" and tell em that's the only reason why you bought the GT30 in the first place (instead of the ST30).

They are refunding my original purchase as store credit. Now to search their stores for a Panasonic Plasma in the refunded amount, it won't be easy, I have a feeling I will be over in the LED section shortly.
