I just wondered if its still worth sticking with Panasonic as a brand now they are mostly LED? Are their LED's better than the other LED's out there? Or is it a matter of, no plasma, no Panasonic?

So far the LED's that Panasonic has released have been terrible. Their LED line is nothing like their plasma line.

For LED's right now Sony and Samsung have the best. Still waiting on the 2014 Vizio's which might actually be decent as well. Panasonic making the claim that their 2014 LED will be equal to the ZT60, that is called desperate marketing which is not going to fool anyone.

I see no reason whatsoever to buy a Panasonic TV anymore now that they've discontinued their plasma lineup.  Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Vizio all make far superior LED's in my opinion.  I really can't understand what Panasonic is thinking?

They're thinking "We just have to get out of the unprofitable CE industry and focus more on the profitable Business products now".

Panasonic has been masterful in creating a product contrast between their two product lines that allows one of them (LED) to be as bad as the other (plasma) was good. I mean really, for the price the Panasonic LEDs have been almost universally panned.

Universally panned? That's not exactly true. Their reviews have been pretty favorable. However, I agree that with some models, there maybe better choices out there in terms of performance verses value. I've seen the E series which isn't a bad set for the money. Wouldn't think of trading my plasma in for one though. wink.gif

i've heard that there were some curious problems with the demonstration that Panasonic presented for their 4K "Studio Master LED", trying to say it was better than the ZT60. For example, one reviewer noted a lamp shining right down on the ZT60 which obviously would have had a negative impact on the perception of the set's performance in comparison with the LED.

btw, I too am Ian, which always throws me for a loop when I see references to Ian on this subforum :P

The ZT was also set to low panel brightness which degrades blacks

Sounds like a move right out of Samsung's playbook.

I think everyone does it just a little strange to handicap your own flagship product to sell some LEDs.

The accountants don't care about flagships, and they're the ones calling the shots at Panasonic these days after the billions in lost revenue. frown.gif

very bright in stores .

Plasma is just a better technology for image quality but the trade off is a dimmer picture, higher power consumption, and the fact that they are a bit more finicky than LCD/LED which are pretty much set it and forget it.  All I know is once you watch a blu-ray or other such high quality HD video on a properly set up plasma in a light-controlled room you won't ever be able to stomach the look of an LED in the same situation again...

Although both LCD and Plasmas have their weaknesses, plasma technology was created for TV's. LCD technology was primarily created for computer monitors. TV's scale, computer screens usually do not. TV's spend most of their time displaying moving images. Computer screens spend most of their time displaying static images. TV's can be fairly large and often require wide angle viewing. Computer screens are relatively small, and are displayed at close distances.

Get the picture? No pun intended. wink.gif
