Pioneer Kuro 5080HD - $500CAD - jump on it?

My bro is looking to replace his TV, and i found someone in the locals looking to sell his Kuro 5080HD for $500CAD. This is just meant for a bedroom, no real Home Theatre will be built around it. If we can get it down to $400 or even $350 - is it worth it for a 7yo TV?

Im coming from a 50" panasonic TH-50PX75U, and replaced it with another panasonic 60" ST50 - so i love plasmas and especially pannies. Never had a chance to take a real look at the legendary Kuros line before - is this worth the price?

I just found a 5020 (9g) for $350 OR best offer in the ATL area. If I didn't already have one with the d-nice tweek I'd jump on that or a similar deal in an instant, assuming the condition is as described. 5080 should be valued at only slightly less if in good condition.

Is the 5080HD a 9G Kuro?

He describes it as "excellent condition, terrific picture" ...obviously this doesnt mean anything but if i can talk it down to $400 - maybe i can pay him a visit and look for any weird anomalies.

Nope. It's an 8g and only 720p but don't let that dissuade you. It's actually got a lot more picture controls than the comparable 9g models. If you can get it for under $400 (and you're talking canadian dollars, is that what CAD means?) then it's still a good deal, provided it actually is as described. One word of caution though. Because it's another year older, it might have even more hours on it, so probably good to inquire about usage habits (number of hours on average per day, videogaming/ letter box movies, etc..)

Kuros (of which 8g and 9g are both a part) almost never have burn in but it's better to be safe and investigate. My 5020FD never had more than a hint of image retention (non permanent burn in) until I stopped running it with the orbiter and even then, it was so minute as to not be a worry at all.

I wouldn't pay $400 for a 50" 720p 8G Kuro, especially when you can get a new 1080p Samsung 50" or 60" F5300 for not much more. They should have the same black levels (.004fL).

Thanks - dude just agreed to $350CAD (Canadian) flat, which is about $327USD. A 51" F5300 sells retail at $683+tax, and its already on sale.

Ill take a look at the set tomorrow, bring a USB and look for any weird uniformity/IR issues. I'm hoping the guy is some sort of enthusiast to be owning a Kuro - hopefully its been taken care of/calibrated etc.
