Panasonic to POSSIBLY manufacture plasma sets as "special orders" only?

Ok, this falls squarely into the the "take it with a gigantic grain of salt" category, of course, but while at Magnolia today the manager and I started chatting about plasmas, the ZT/VT60's, the sad state of affairs when it comes to picture quality in today's market, etc., and after a while she actually let slip that a Panasonic rep mentioned the "possibility" of them going back and manufacturing a few select plasma models like the VT60 on a special-order, direct-from-the-manufacturer basis (Best Buy nor any other retail outlet would be in the equation). I was surprised by the comment, to say the least, and even asked her how that would be possible considering their plant was shut down months ago and a lot of their staff was let go, not to mention OLED (hopefully) making all of this irrelevant (again, hopefully). She agreed with me and explained the news was just as surprising for her to hear, but that was indeed what the Panasonic rep mentioned as a possibility for 2015.

Anybody else know anything about this?

Yeah, I know... One can dream...

By the way, the TV landscape at Best Buy/Magnolia is beyond depressing...

A mountain of salt but I definitely would order one or two if it truly came to be, alas the likelihood of that transpiring are nil. Assuming the price was reasonable.

I have spoken to three different Panasonic reps at BB and Magnolia during the past 6 years or so and they knew less about their Plasma TVs than most people here on AVS do. Seriously misinformed about their own product.

Panasonic's panel factory wasn't just shut down, it was completely dismantled and i understand that the building has been sold as well. Not sure how they'd be able to make a plasma to order, unless they have some leftover panel modules stashed away.

highly unlikely.

if they couldn't make a profit selling the vt60's when mass produced, they'll never make a profit selling them piece-meal. they'd probably have to charge 10grand per set to compensate for the low production.
bestbuy employees are the last place I'd go for reputable information.

IF, this unlikely story had any truth, it'd still be a scary scenario. I mean, like RandyWalters said, they can't just turn on the lights, and blow off the dust and fire up their old plant. and there's no way they'd invest in a new plant for this, so... are they buying panels from Samsung or LG? probably LG if Samsung is shutting down production too. do you really want a LG panel in your new VT70?(maybe if its oled )

Even if it was true, wouldn't special orders be too expensive anyways? ~$5k for a 65" VT60, no thanks!

For $5k you can still get a 65VT60.
