Pansonic to Enter OLED Market - Soon? contains link to newer thread

I talked to a Best Buy employee tonight (9-3-14), and she told me "on the down low" that Panasonic, after a bit of hand-wringing from the store's employees, told them that it plans to introduce its OLED sets at Best Buy in 2015. She stated this was the reason that Panasonic abandoned its plasmas.

Regarding the size, however, she said 50"-55", and she stated that she thought they would have non-curved models. Confident about the Panasonic OLED statement; the size and non-curve screen....take with a grain of salt.

please use this thread in correct forum:

I'll believe it when I see them, I highly doubt BB out of all people would know something the rest of the world doesn't. In a positive note, I would love it, if it was true, specially if they are flat and 4k.

I would not believe anything a blue shirt salesperson who peddles $50 HDMI cables says. And by the way, they already made an OLED TV 2 years ago.

Panasonic makings OLED is not news....had models at last CES....however, reports were that Panasonic mass marketing the sets was years away. What is new, if what Panasonic rep said is true, is Panasonic mass marketing OLED sets in 2015.

this is awesome news, but I don't expect best buy employees to even know Panasonic has left the plasma business yet, let alone be let in on a 'secret' that Panasonic is keeping from the public.

anything that promotes oled is a good thing in my books though. even if it's utter bs, haha

Every Best Buy employee I have every talked regarding HDTV knows Panasonic plasmas are gone, and many snapped them up prior to their exit.

fine, they know the difference between a plasma and an lcd, that clearly means they are privy to the internal workings of every major manufacturer that sells to them...

I just don't trust that Panasonic would spill the beans to a bb employee. it makes no sense. it's either the rep blowing smoke, or the BB employee. it's reasonable to assume Panasonic will enter the oled market sometime soon, my doubts are that this information is actually Panasonics plan right now, and not just an internal rumour, or 'best guess' that any one of us could have come up with. I mean I could probably state Samsung is going to be back in the oled market in 2016, and I may be right. but that statement isn't based of anything concrete.

I hope it ends up being true, and it may very well be. I just don't buy that the BB sales staff heard this from a credible source. she may have read it on avs forums somewhere and wanted to make it sound more credible than 'I read it online' when she was talking to you.

This is good news. It was only a matter of time before another company enters the OLED market to give LG some much-needed competition.

There is no news. And if there was it would have been a official Panasonic statement.

If the BB employee was the head or 2nd at the corporate A/V purchasing unit...maybe as they'd have contact and access to Panasonic's higher ups. A general front of the store retail employee in uniform blue shirt - I doubt he has better access to info than the sum of the people on this forum a number of whom are vastly better placed in the industry to pick up this kind of info.

Not saying it can't happen, not saying I don't want it to happen or it won't happen - just saying retail Best Buy employee status caries nearly zero weight on something like this. I've met a "few" who know what they are doing and I've seen those same few be wrong as all hell on stuff like this too.

Then again, this is all just logic for me as I have no better proprietary access to such info than said BB employee.

It really isnt a "low down" secret. Panasonic execs have said OLED is the future. But only once the price comes down and they are 4K.

It's mainly the 2015 and particulars to screen shapes and sizes coming next year that was suspect. But like I said - I'd be very happy, as the sooner the top names get into the OLED market the faster the technology will evolve and become more affordable...and it's already pretty appetizing.

Actually OLED wasn't even main reason Panasonic abandoned plasma.

A 55" 1080p OLED would be just fine with me, as long as it's FLAT. I'm very sensitive to SDE, but i see zero SDE on my 55" ST60 at my 8 foot viewing distance so a UHD screen would be virtually useless to me.

55" is the most popular screen size for the past few years, and UHD resolution wouldn't be necessary in this screen size for most owners - especially considering that there is virtually no 4K content available to 99% of the public.

I do hope that OLED turns out to be a stable viable technology, and that Panasonic and/or Sony start offering flat OLED TVs at a manageable price sometime in the next year or two.

Indeed let's hope, especially Panasonic since they tend to have the best designed and engineered sets (not that Sony is any slouch).

This is old news. LG in Talks to Supply OLED Panels to Panasonic
But since they were still in the negotiating stage in June, if it does happen, it will be some time before these sets will go into production.

As someone who worked at BB / Magnolia for several years before going back to school, that person doesn't know s@#&. Anybody working at a store will have no idea about the inner workings of one of the vendors. Sure, "reps" come in from time to time, but they don't tell us anything secret about upcoming products. When it shows up in the inventory system is when it would be real. Closer to launch, the vendor sends the training materials (i.e. buzz words to sell the set) to corporate, who distribute it to the store.
