The higher the cell light and contrast setting, the hotter the display. When properly calibrated with sufficient clearance for airflow, not extremely hot.
There is a Samsung owner who hooked up a computer fan(s) to the top rear vents (blowing outward of course) and plugged it into the displays powered USB port, if excessive heat is an issue for your display.
mine usually gets up to around 44C after being on for a while. I've not seen it any higher, but it's not like I check that often.
oddly, I have not noticed a difference in this when I turn down the luminance though. even when set with a peak white of ~30ftl, it still runs up around 44C
I was in Best Buy today and decided to cancel my order for the F5300 and go with the F8500 when it comes in for pickup.
The 64F8500 that they had on display was significantly hotter than the 60F5300 & 51F4500 that they had on display with the later being the coolest. I bet the Pentile display also helps with the 60F5300 (as does the 1024x768p of the 51F4500).
PS - Yes I decided to go with the 51F8500 afterall.
the f8500 uses about double the power, so it's going to generate more heat. even if it runs as cool to touch as the others, that only means it's doing a good job of transferring the heat it produces into the room.
i can't say i've ever really noticed my plasma heat up the basement(i used to have that issue with my projector), but it is definitely going to act like a little radiator. hopefully you already have a/c to deal with the summer heat, and then it shouldn't really be an issue as long as your room is properly ventilated.
51 inch here with a Cell light at about 15 or 16 most of the time. My panel temp peaks at around 41. Maybe a little higher if the house in general is a bit warmer. My temps DO go up as cell light does. Mine is on a low profile mount.
The reaon why I ask is that this is one of the serious drawbacks to plasma for me. As I live in the South where it gets really hot & muggy during the long Summer....and not so cold during the short Winter.
