Panasonic TH-50PX60U Replacement

Hello all.

I'm looking for advice on replacing my panasonic plasma. It's been a really great TV and still works perfectly fine. Given that it was manufactured in 08/2006 I've been amazed at how trouble free it has been. That said, I've been debating giving it to my in-laws and going for an upgrade. I'd like to keep my budget to sub-$500. Is there anything less than $500 that will be a large enough upgrade to justify replacing a perfectly fine TV? We sit about 9-10' from the TV.

Thanks in advance for your input!

On a side note - I just ordered a Yamaha RX-V675 from Amazon. My Denon AVR-2803 (made in 2003) finally started acting up over the past few days. I think I have been exceedingly lucky with my home theater purchases.

Thanks for the reply. Could you point me towards the right LG model number? I'll do some reading about the F5300.

Thanks again for your help / time.

Thanks for the suggestion. Would that be a worthy upgrade? Especially going 720P to 720P? I am an admitted lawmen at figuring this stuff out but I'm good with staying with what I have if $500 doesn't net a decent gain.

Thanks a ton. That does seem like a great price. I'll do some reading.

No microcenter near me but maybe I can price match or something.

After a lot of reading I ended up stretching my budget a little and picking up an open box 51" F8500 from my local best buy. I'm nervous about it being an open box but I can return it no questions asked so I took the risk. I ended up getting the TV for $775 + Tax delivered. If everything turns out to be fine and it is just like a brand new one, this should be a smoking deal.

nice, if there's nothing wrong with the set, I'd say you got a heck of a deal and a GREAT set to boot.

So my first foray into openbox televisions did not go well. The TV was delivered this morning and as soon as they powered it on you could see some really significant black splotches on the screen. These were 3-4 inches long and maybe 2-3 inches tall. No way this would have been missed if the TV was actually tested (as the Best Buy folks told me that it was). I thought I'd call Best Buy and see what they would do for me. After all, its not what happens but how you handle it right? Not so much. All the store manager was willing to do was offer me a new one at their current price and do it over the phone so I could avoid coming back to the store. So avoiding a trip to the store and paying full price for a new one was considered enough compensation. Not the best in my book. I asked having them toss in an extended warranty for free and they wouldn't even do that. She said she would discount it but would toss it in.

I'm going to try and call back and speak to a different manager later. Not very happy with Best Buy right now. I do want to be sensible though. What do you guys think is a fair resolution?

Well you took a huge risk buying an Open Box from Best Buy and like with so many others here it ended in disappointment. There's not much they can do for you at this point so i'd just cut my losses and move on to the next step.

Right now BB's price is $998 for a brand new 51F8500 which is literally HALF of what it was going for several months ago so i'd jump on that before it goes away forever. That is a fantastic deal on the best 50" class TV that will ever be made.

Ultimately this is what I arrived at as well. I took the plunge and purchased a new one at the 1000 price tag. It gets delivered on Saturday and here is to hoping I get a good one with no issues because I doubt there will be stock for replacements.

To be fair, I'm not annoyed that I had to reject an open box. I'm annoyed that I had to reject an open box with blatantly obvious defects that I was told was tested. That TV should have never been sold.

One of the other managers was easier to work with. They couldn't budge on the price because of UMRP but he did give me half off of some speakers I was looking at. In the end I do believe he was trying to make it right.
