Looking hard- Samsung 60" 5300

From the research I've done, for my budget this seems to be the best TV available. Going with Plasma for the picture quality--that's the main thing that matters for me. Will be used for watching sports and movies, in a basement so I can make it as dark as needed on movie night. :-)

Will be hooking up to a surround system so not worried about audio.

If I can find one available, is this the TV for me? Or is there another to consider in this price range. Going from an eight year old 37" Scepter so I'm pretty sure I'm going to like the upgrade, but just wanting the best bang for my buck.

The 60" 5300 was still available at Best Buy as of yesterday. I love mine!

Ya, it's the best deal going for the price.

I can't think of anything better for the price by a long shot. If I could find one I'd look for the 64" H500 next. But there should still be a few around. Costco may have them still as well? (sold as a 5350 if they do).

Love mine too. Love it.

Just pulled the trigger online. However I'm concerned that I'll get the 5300A and not the B version. Any ideas/thoughts?

I just ordered one too. Guy at Best Buy assured me that it would be a B unit. Hard to get an A unit now I think aside from a display model. We'll see when it arrives though.

Don't sweat the A/B thing. Sure the B has shown to be improved, but the A is still damned good and better than anything else you'll find at a remotely similar price. At this point in time you just have to be happy to have found a set at all.

I just bought one last weekend,
Best Buy had them so did some Sears, and also someplace you may not think to check, Kmart had them as well!

I am just blown away by mine. Only had it a few days But even with such little time on it, the picture just blows away my old TV.
I have wanted Plasma a long time, just never had the money, Really did not have it now But with supplies quickly drying up, I found the money!

You will have the light control you need, so do not delay! Get out and get one while they are there to get!

Sears and Kmart are both subsidiaries of Sears Holdings Corporation and share many products, including Samsung plasmas.

Does the final production version (the "B" units) of the 60F5300 utilize a pentile screen? I am concerned about the "screen-door" effect, to which my eyes are sensitive.

Thank you, QN52.

Based on posts here on various threads, I was leaning towards the Samsung 60F5300 for its oft-stated superior black levels compared with LG's offerings. My alternative is an LG 60PB6650. But the Samsung's pentile screen would likely drive me batty.

Since I will probably now purchase the LG 6650, I hope its black levels, after calibration, will be acceptable. (I am spoiled by the deep blacks and overall superb picture of the final-generation Panasonic 65" plasma in our movie room.)

I would try and find one in a showroom somewhere...I have the 51" screen, but was looking at the 60" as well - I couldn't notice the screen door effect from my viewing distance.

I wish an in-store test and potential purchase were possible, but it's LCDs only in this area.

I regret not buying another Panasonic plasma soon after they officially discontinued the line on Halloween 2013 (later that same day I purchased our 65" Panasonic plasma from Amazon).

Late last night I crossed my fingers and ordered the LG 60-inch 6650.

I think you will be happy with your purchase. I own a pb6900 and absolutely love it's picture quality. I came from the f5300 and was bothered by the pentile screen. I nit pick a lot and every little flaw bothers be so I ended up taking it back for the pb6900. I can't wait to see this set calibrated...

I'm curious, how close is your viewing position? To me the pentile screen only seemed to be a concern up close.

Thank you for the comforting words. I will be viewing the TV from two different seats, which are 7 and 10 away. I am pretty sure the pentile screen would bother me.

On letterboxed movies in a dark room, would you say your LG's black bars are gray, very dark gray, or black?

Black. You'll really notice how good it is once you get 300+ hours and the picture really starts to set.

Excellent. Thank you.

Now back to the regular scheduled programming--a thread about the Samsung 60F5300!

The pros who've thoroughly tested both generally agree that the Samsung's shortcomings are less bothersome than the LG's shortcomings. But some people seem to be more sensitive to the Samsung's shortcomings than the LG's. Choose wisely based on what your own eyes tell you.

Got mine yesterday - gorgeous picture and have it next to my sony W850B (still in the return window as well) Really looks great.....

...but...

the flickering is a deal breaker. Had the same issue with an F8500 that I got and returned. Not sure what happened to PDP production over the last few years but I never saw flickering on my ol 2003/4 fujitsu 50" plasma.

Super bummed but am returning the F5300. Now am either going to just grit my teeth and live with the milky tones of the w850b, or dig in to the wallet and get the lg ec9300 oled.

But for those of you who don't notice/see the flickering, my hat's off to you. Jealous. You've got an amazing pic for cheap.

lol, the LG has terrible black levels. If you think that's black you haven't seen a proper setup.

Flickering is apparently a problem that a small percentage of people have with some plasmas and CRTs. Must be a similar level of sensitivity to those who have problems with RBE on DLP projectors.

I just so happened to own the f5300 before the pb6900 and I've owned a Panasonic plasma for years. I also owned another LG as well and I agree the blacks weren't great on that but the picture quality was great. I know black when I see black.

I guess I'm one of the "lucky" ones. Jokes aside, I never saw it on my Fujitsu, or other PDPs back in the day when I was doing my homework. Since I just got rid of my PDP a couple of months ago, it's not something that I developed over the years. I have a feeling that PDPs coming off the last few cycles may just not have had the same level of quality. JMO obviously - no evidence whatsoever. But I do know that flickering is an aspect of the tech, so it is what it is. PDP dead for me. Hopefully the LG9300 OLED I just ordered will do the trick, otherwise I'll have to stick with the flat and artificial looking W850B for the foreseeable future. (LED needs to die

But again, the F5300B has an awesome PQ and to those who don't see any flickering, you're in great shape for years.

Our local Best Buy was advertising the F5300A and I even had the salesman double check. He said no, their all A's....when they brought ours out from the back it was a 5300B, so I was pretty stoked about that. They even priced matched so we got it for 699 plus 10% off.
Not bad for a 60" Plasma.
