Exclamation LCD Crushes OLED In Public Shootout

It just goes to prove, that when it comes to over all picture quality today, some consumers prefer super bright displays. Fortunately, I'm not one of them.

LCD-crushes-OLED-in-public-TV-shoot-out!

It's more complicated than that since HDR is a moving target. What a click bait title. I for one will be depriving John Archer of his ill-begotten ad revenue.

Pretty much balanced verses brightness. I chose balanced, especially for HT applications.

OLED has replaced plasma as the only currently manufactured emissive display.

the cool is thing is that i have my own eyes, and don't really care what 80% of the 'general population' likes.

certainly discussion/conversation worthy. but has 0 impact on my next purchase

then there's this little tibit 'hidden' near the bottom, "Of the 22 votes cast on SDR performance, no less than 18 went to the E6"

which i read as, with 100% of the content i'm likely to view in the next 10yrs, oled is the obvious choice even for casual viewers

i feel the same way about HDR as i did about 3D. it's a level of 'realism' that's unwelcomed in my theatre. or i should say, the increased brightness aspect of HDR is unwelcomed. the reduction of banding while maintaining a similar peak output would be very nice.

then again, the chances of me having any tv in my theater again is pretty darn slim. and i've never actually bought a tv specifically for the living room. it's always been theater hand me downs, so who knows what i'll do when the f8500 dies

The shootout focused heavily on HDR picture quality but also included a SDR session. The HDTVtest shootout also included a vote on SDR (standard dynamic range) picture quality where the LG E6 OLED wiped out the competition. It received 18 votes and the remaining four went to Samsung’s KS9500.

Reminds me of how consumers voted with their wallets when choosing between LCD and plasma on display under bright warehouse lighting in big box stores.

So, from the Forbes article there is one thing that is a massive clue that this was not a well conducted shootout. Here is the quote from the section about the E6 OLED:
Quote:
Its brightness settings also needed to be upped from the default value of “50” to restore some shadow detail in HDR mode, which elevated its blacks, so the black level gap between OLED and LED LCD was narrowed.
For me, this suggests that none of the panels were properly calibrated. Default values??? WTF? They call this a shootout?? Sounds more like a crap shoot to me.

Good point Ian. I love my ZT60 and VT30 but if either of them konk out on me then OLED would be the only option for me. So I'm always checking the OLED threads and also talking about OLED's on the Plasma Forums.

Where the TVs not calibrated to the same brightness or do OLEDs just have a pretty active ABL?

As this was primarily for HDR and HDR is still a crapshoot that depends heavily on your display, your display setup, the content itself and your room conditions-- I'd take this with a grain of salt.

Besides, most people I know can't even find the HD channels on their cable guide and end up watching the standard def version warped to fit their screen and blasted into their eyeballs in spectacular 'vivid' mode-- and love it. What can I say? 40% of the population is voting for the wealthy offspring of the unholy coupling of a realestate tycoon and an orangutan. Nothing makes sense anymore.

What to do if you find yourself stuck with no hope of rescue:
Consider yourself lucky that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn't been good to you so far, which given your present circumstances seems to be more likely, consider yourself lucky that it won't be troubling you much longer...
