I have been struggling with the same thought. I came to the realization this weekend that by the time 1080p is widely available there will also likely be a better display technology and/or huge improvement in plasma/lcd technology of today. So no matter what I'll want to upgrade in 3-5 years. Buying a TV is rapidly becoming similar to buying a computer where the technology improves every quarter or so.
The advice I gave to myself was to buy a TV today that I love but to be mindful that new tech is right around the corner so don't spend so much that I can justify going through this process again in a few years. If I spend 5k on a TV today I better stick with it for the next 7-10 years. Or I can spend 2500 every 3-5 years. Buy what looks good to you. I personally like the panasonics. Just make sure to get it calibrated correctly.
Thanks for the comments, Stupid question, are the pioneer pdp-5070HD and the pdp-5071 exactly the same. I think im leaning towards the pioneer 5071 because its on sale at Bestbuy and i have a 12% coupon, so it kinda gets me closer to the less expencisive panasonic and samsung within about 500.00, and if anyone owns the 5071, was curious on how the glare is.
Well i decided to try the pioneer, BB had one in stock so i picked it up and Billy Bob they gave me the sale price and the 12% off, which made it a good deal with the reward dollars too. Im just hoping that i dont have any major glare issues because it turned out to be a decent deal and i havent tried plasma before, ( so im hoping i want have to return it.)
