I think I must have violated some AVS rule, or this is bringing too much attention, because I didn't remove the pictures.

I believe I have been asked to discontinue this discussion, so I will comply with the moderators request. I will continue to update over at the Digg site.

Thanks for all the support guy's.

Edit: Ok it appears I exceeded my ISP's bandwidth for the pictures, so they shut down my account and erased all my pictures without any warning.

Glass shelves look sexy as all get-out and sure bring in the compliments - but there is always that "Sword of Damacles" hanging over our collective heads and minds.

Best of luck with this, Free. I hope it all turns out in your favour - please let us know what happens at the end of this real-life drama.

Man, a 1K stand made for 40.00 US in china. That's where they are all made. I went to china and visited the factories because my brother sells HT stands. They are all cheap. It cost them next to nothing to make and by the time you buy it's 1K.

I just heard from Paul, via e-mail and he said that he will get me a new top shelf in two months. I hope this is the case.

2 months seems like an excessive amount of time to replace the glass, good luck.

Why is it that every idiot gets a glass tv stand? I never get that. If you buy anything worth more than $50 don't use a glass table. I don't care what the rating is. GLASS IS FREAKING GLASS. It will break, it has no flexiblity, god fobid and earthquake, and it can't deal with heat or extreme cold.

DO NOT USE GLASS people. Unless your going to get a plexiglass table, or pyrex... ;-) either way they are also ugly as hell

Now, Now, Now., don't get carried away.

I have a beautifull all-glass dinning table and a coffee table and they look gorgeous.

But putting a 50" Plasma TV on it is definately asking for trouble

Settle down. You apparently have never visited Corning Inc. Your mind will change instantly when you walk in.

If the glass top is rated (e.g. specified) to carry loads of 200lbs then why not? The OP load was well below the specified limit.

Does anyone remember the scene from Animal House where Otter seduces Mrs. Wormer and on her way to bed she kicks off her high heels onto the glass end table and it shatters? Of course, that was 1962 glass.

Call your credit card COMPANY ASAP. Tell them it happened within the last 30 days. You will be protected under purchase protection. $1000 is exactly the limit most cards cover.

Purchase protection on many credit cards is for 90 days from the purchase date.

I was trying to get in touch with AVDECO with regard to their TP 205 - Casters (I need them to build furniture) and their phone # has changed and when I spoke to their representative he told me they are no longer in business and he can't help me. I was not expecting to hear this, however I noticed that there are no authorized dealers for AVDECO. Does anybody know what happened (did they file for bankruptcy?). Too bad because apart from one of their product's being crappy they seem to have an excellent selection of products.

I would simply get a wood shop to make a top for you. You can have all kinds of fancy edges made and it WILL support the TV. Probably cost you very little to boot.

I remember my mothers and sisters tempered glass tables exploding looks like the same thing. Its not the weight of the set its the glass itself. Both of theirs broke into tiny shards just like this one with no weight at all.

Screw taking another chance ......but make them send you the glass anyway.

Wonder why they are no longer in business? Maybe poor quality products and no customer service!

I had the same thing happen with my Bello Plasma Stand.

As my wife and I were in another room of our home we heard this strange cracking sound and then a HUGE BOOM.

We ran to the room where our plasma TV was and the entire top glass shelf of the Bello Plasma stand had exploded all over the room and the plasma stand had fallen to the floor and was a total loss.

I am currently in a lawsuit against Ultimate Electronics, Ultimate Aquisition parters, and Bello International over the failure of the stand.

Any other stories of this happening to anyone else ???

Glass stands to hold any screen at any weight is a risky business.

I think the moral of the story is to not trust what the manufacturers of these glass stands say because more than often, to cut costs and cut corners, they will use cheap inferior material (glass in this case).

this reminds me of something I read about the new version of pyrex glass they're making that replaces the old stuff that can violently explode without warning. Apparently they changed the design or chemical makeup of the stuff and it's now prone to doing this.

http://www.complaints.com/directory/...mber/14/27.htm

off topic I know.

I'd never set my expensive electronics on glass.. I just don't trust it.. especially tempered glass.. one crack and the whole thing will break into a million little pieces by design.

Ignorance is certainly bliss.

I have a Bello glass stand that is presently used for a 70 lb. plasma and never had a second thought about it. It used to support a 160 lb. CRT with no problems over a 5 year period. I am replacing the plasma with a Pioneer PRO-FHD1 and after reading this thread, I am now concerned and may have to buy a wooden stand. Damn, I hate this forum!!

I just wanted to update, I have heard from Paul, and he is still interested in replacing the top for me. I don't have it yet, but at least he is still in contact with me.

I went out the other day, to get something to replace it. It has a wood top.

My 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma weighs 120 lbs. with the base and the speakers attached.

I found out after the fact that Bello's technical data states that the stand should hold 125 lbs. but that is assuming that the 125 lbs. is distributed across the entire glass surface like with a traditional CRT television.

Your 160 lb. CRT tube likely has a large base which distributes the load across a larger area than a plasma base does.

The Plasma mounting bases introduce a much higher concentrated load (pounds per sq. in. (psi))

This should be a real concern for anyone with a plasma set on a glass top.

Just because the glass doesn't fail immediatly doesn't mean it won't fail 6 months or a year later like mine did. The heating and cooling effect of the glass from the other A/V components below exacerbates this material weakening phenomenon.

I just wanted to post an update to my situation, and let everyone know that Paul came through for me, and a replacement glass top was delivered yesterday. He went out of his way, to take care of me, and is a good guy.
