Thanks to all for the excellent information and awesome pictures. I'm closing in on purchasing a 110 and I am wondering what Mfr Dates or S/N have been purchased recently. Any info from the last couple of months will help. Thanks in advance!

As the new owner of a 150FD, try to make the MFR date Jan 2008 like mine, and not earlier. The rumor is the power supply was changed late December 2007 over what some owners call "a buzz".

I haven't found the improvements to be as dramatic as others, but it certainly adds a bit more pop to the whole experience. It has the odd effect of making the TV and speakers seem closer...really weird when I first noticed it.

Thanks

Even though the source media for these shots was HD DVD, I don't think you'd see much of a difference if I took photos of the Apple TV playing HD purchased from iTunes, given that these photos don't really do justice to the 5080 to begin with. Unless you're *really* looking for differences instead of watching the movie, I think that the Apple TV HD rentals are going to be a great alternative to physical media for many of us once they expand their library.

I used my Canon Powershot S3, which I've had for probably 6 years. I took a bunch of shots with various exposure lengths—I think these shots were somewhere in the .4-.6 second range, and are the closest I could get to an accurate representation of my picture. That said, it looks better in person

I really like the total image the bias lighting provides. Is yours a DIY, or did you buy the lamps from a retailer?

Pictures were taken with a crappy point-and-shoot. Wish they could be better, but this is best I could do.

phorts, after posting the issue in another thread in the plasma section, and another in the bluray section, I've been told that grain is there because its intended to be there -- in other words, its not supposed to look like the Grammys. This was my fundamental misunderstanding. Add dithering issues, and what I see is what I should expect to see.

I took some time to find a scene that had very low dithering/noise/grain.

Those pics really make me want to save my money and get the 5080 instead of the 5010. The PQ is better than any non Pioneer 1080p set that I've seen. I just don't want to kick myself later for not going for the 5010, and knowing that the 1080p version is out there. But the money saved would buy me a PS3 and proper cables for a total price equal to or less than the 5010 by itself. Are any of you 5080 owners wishing you had bought the 5010 instead?

I'm not. I've had my 5080 since Christmas and still absolutely love it. No regrets here. I sit 10 feet away, so I doubt my eyes would be able to tell the difference between the 5080 and 5010. My wallet on the other hand would definitely be able to tell the difference!

Same here. I sit between 8-10 feet. If anything, I'd have rather spent my money on the Elite 720p, but I am totally satisfied with my 5080.

The situation is a little different now. Since the 5080's are gone people either have to go for a 5010FD or the 1150HD

+2...watching American Idol right now (at the mercy of the wife and kids!!!) and at my seating distance of 10 feet, I can't imagine that 1080p would be worth the extra $$$.

I have had my 5080 for over a month now and I love it. If the 5010 was like ~500 bucks more than what I got the 5080 for, then I would have seriously considred it. The price of my 5080 was 2gs when I got it. I sit 8.5ft away from my tv (measured it from screen to my eyes) and I love it. Its by far the best TV I ever owned and I have owned more than my share in the past 11 years (over 7 different models ranging from standard tubes, to high def tubes, CRT rear projection from Pioneer, to LCD and another Plasma). To me, the extra money you would save on not getting the 5010 (especially if your viewing distance is beyond 8ft) could be spent on some Blu ray player, xbox 360 or something else. If money is not an issue, then the 5010 could be a better choice maybe even the 6010

I'm laying on my bed as I type this and watching Idol also between 5' to 7' in all it's 1080p glory! Sitting this close makes the 50" screen look massive, and an amazing experience with any source. Bluray looks unreal, like an Imax theatre experience! Worth every freakn penny...and the premium is negligible spread over 2 months or less.

Hallelujah for 1080p !
