I saw your sad little thread with no responses and felt bad for you since no one is responding. Just want to let you know that I'm sending you mojo.

There are a few other threads on the Maxent 58" ... as well as the Maxent 50" that you may want to go through for thoughts and impressions.

58 inch here:

I've seen this unit in CostCo and it seems okay, not spectacular, but decent and it is certainly big and priced competitively. But I can't really give you a review.

I have a Maxent 58" plasma that supposedly has an ATSC tuner. Doesn't this mean I should be able to receive HD channels using an antenna? (I built a Coat Hanger Quad Bow Tie). When I scan for channels it only appears to scan for analog channels ... am I missing something? Thanks!

Sounds like the tv doesnt have a ATSC tuner.Although your chneels should be (ie channel 10) 10.1 or 10-1

Thanks, I think you are right. I can't get to channel x.1
I'm up in Canada ... I think they dumped a bunch of TVs up here without the digital tuners built in.

It would help if you include the model number and maybe a link to the specs or owners manual.

If it has an ATSC tuner, then it has to be able to tune the digital channels OTA. Are you sure you're doing the channel scan correctly? Are you sure your home-made antenna is capable of pulling in your local stations? How many miles are you from the digital towers?

Do a little browsing in this and the LCD forum. Notice how many really long multi-page threads there are with third-tier mfgs. models in the title that originated 3 years or so ago--Westinghouse, Haier, Viewsonic, etc.

Go to the first pages of these threads and they're full of glowing reveiws from people very happy that they got such a great deal on a tv.

Then go to the last few pages to find that an alarming number of these sets are malfunctionning, most with the same problem, and in many cases with no hope of repair.

Don't get me wrong, there is a place in the market for these tvs--I call it the "dorm room" tv, a set whose buyer might be a student who isn't super picky about picture quality and doesn't intend to keep it for an extended period of time, or for a buyer who wants a set for a vacation home or guest room that isn't going to be used much.

They can be a disappointment to the buyer who wants a set to last for the long term.

I have A maxent 58" and its nothing but problems. I bough it at cosco and paid about $2400.00, first the remote gave out and now the picture on the screen doesn't stop jumping. I will never buy another maxent ever again.
