HDMI 1.4 can't do 1080p@120hz? - AVS Forum

Someone want to tell me why? It clearly has the supported bandwidth.

I've done a lot of reading and can't figure it out. My New 3DTV was suppose to be connected to my computer and run 1080p @ 120hz, however I now come to find that HDMI 1.4 can't support it and you need DVI-D (which no TV on the market has).

That is correct it cannot. HDMI chipsets cannot support 1080p/120 bitrate (probably the required encryption doesn't help either). That is why Blu-Ray 3D is limited to 1080p/24 (really 48 with both eyes).

The maximum supported bit rate has been sufficient since the HDMI 1.3 spec. Like Andy said, the electronics in the equipment don't support it.

FWIW if you see 120 Hz in the specs for a TV, it probably is referring to the refresh rate of the screen, not the frame rate of the source material. They are two different things.

Why do you need 120 Hz frame rate?
