ARC question

I have a new Samsung F8500 plasma (HDMI v1.4) and an older Onkyo receiver (HDMI 1.3). If I plug all of my sources into the TV, then run an HDMI cable from the ARC port on the TV to an HDMI input on the receiver, will I be able to get audio from the sources connected to the TV?

The best way to do ARC and the way most people have it set up is Source>AVR>TV. This way you get the best audio from your sources and the TV will pass it's audio via ARC to the AVR.

If you go Source>TV>AVR then you'd miss out on the uncompressed audio from Blu-rays.

As long as your Onkyo has an HDMI port labeled for ARC. Not all receivers are ARC capable but you should be able to determine that by reading the manual. Keep in mind that the only advantage of ARC is the elimination of an optical cable. ARC is limited to 5.1, just like optical.

'If you go Source>TV>AVR then you'd miss out on the uncompressed audio from Blu-rays.' - many TV's are worse than that and will only support 2.0 audio on the HDMI Inputs and or ARC Output.

As others have said ARC only works when the TV and AVR are ARC enabled - ignore HDMI versions numbers and look for 'Feature' support.

As hard as I look, I can't find a Onkyo receiver model # HDMI 1.3.

Is it possible there's some other MODEL NUMBER which may allow us to look up the exact product you are asking about?
