Is HDMI with Ethernet cable useless?

I found this video that talks about HDMI with Ethernet being useless.

Do I need to have my AV or whatever device that the HDMI with Ethernet will connect to able to accept the Ethernet part of it? If so, when looking at those devices, what should be I looking at specifically?

Yes.

+1. The device mfrs never adopted that HDMI spec so when you see it advertised as a spec, it's totally meaningless. The HDMI channel may be used (for eARC) once HDMI 2.1 is implemented but that is far from certain. Even if it is, current HDMI cables won't be able to handle the 48Gbps bandwidth needed for fully compliant HDMI 2.1 so you'll need a new cable (probably very expensive) and HDMI 2.1 chipsets in your devices and cables (if active).
