I already have a 25' Firewire 4-pin to 6-pin cable that I use to hook a camcorder to my computer. I need a longer cable length, but I think my only option now is a Firewire Active Extension cable.

I have seen several cables available online with prices ranging from $20 to $55 for a 14'-16' length.

I have read reviews for one of these cables from CablesToGo that stated that it overheated and burned out!

Is there anything special I should look for in this type of cable or is it just a "buy and hope" operation?

Three of the cables I am considering are:

http://sewelldirect.com/firewireextension.asp

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Bill

Yes, you need the 1394 repeater as a stand alone device or built in to the cable. That will work for you. I have run 100' with the repeaters.

I tried using a repeater myself to connect a DVHS and a TV in seperate rooms.
The repeater doesnt seem to be compatible.

What about using a 33 foot 6 Pin/6 Pin cable into powered hubs/repeaters in each room? This may be my next step. I'll pickup 2 Belkin 6 port hub/repeaters and a 33 foot cable as well as 2 3 foot cables. This setup will likely cost ~$130. If it works, it will be a substantial savings over the unibrain repeaters ($450 for 2 sets), but I dont know if a 33 foot cable connected to these hubs will be sufficient?

Kipp-Any recommendations?

What exactly are the devices you are trying to connect (DVHS & TV model)?

I have a similar Sharp display in 26" and it worked. You may have a sync issue. Have you tried connecting the 1394 link before plugging in the power to your devices? Sometimes it makes adifference.
