Good Afternoon,

I've got a customer trying to connect some equipment using the IEEE 1394 using a Motorola DCT 6200 series. He's not getting any signal and I was wondering if anyone out there as some notes from the industry side of things I can check and test.

As far as I know it should be enabled from the controler and I'd love to verify this using my IEEE 1394 port on my PC at home, however I've never gotten around to it in the past.

You can reach me directly at my email address, just take my first and last name from my signature and email to first.last@chartercom.com

Thanks for any advice!

Views & opinions stated here are strictly those of Me and not Charter Communications.

I no longer work in Tech Ops as such I can only advise & suggest.

Not sure about using a PC, but with a Mac, your best bet would be to run AVCBrowser from FireWire SDK 23 (developer.apple.com/sdk). This app detects all devices on the 1394 bus that support the AV/C protocol, and allows you to test various AV/C commands and plug connections with the detected devices.

In addition, the FireWire SDK application AVCVideoCap can be used to capture in-the-clear streams from a STB. The GUI for AVCVideoCap shows the EMI (encrpytion mode indicator) for incoming streams. If it shows "copy once" or "copy never", then the stream is encrypted, and won't be usable. If it shows "copy freely", then AVCVideoCap should record a valid stream from the STB.

Hope that helps.

Andy

Check the Motorola DCT series cable box article at Wikipedia.org for model and software/firmware information. I suspect the 1394 port on your customer's Motorola box is not enabled by the software/firmware the cable company has installed in the box.
