To make a long story short:

Bot 1) on-line, didn't work, returned, replacement didn't work, gave up.*
Bot 2) locally (30min drive), didn't work.
Bot 3) on-line, WORKED!!!!

* actually bot 4 (3-6', 1-15'), 3 didn't work, returned them, the 6' replacements worked, the 15' didnt. The 6' cables were $.98

Here is a summary of the 3 cables:

1) .200 Diameter
Marked: "B57886 TYPE 75oC Fully Rated 4C+1/28 AWG"
Connector: "IEEE" side A, IEEE Connectivity Symbol/Logo side B
Cost: $9.99 reduced to $1.98 + shipping (

2) .225 Diameter
Marked: "E210567 5U AWM 20276 80oC 30V VW-1 ******** C 5U KAIBO IEEE 1394"
Connector: large logo " i " both sides (Fits very poorly - hard to push in)
Cost $6.98 + tax

3) .250 Diameter
Marked: "E238846 5U AWM 20276 80oC 30V VW-1 CSA 223912 80oC 30V I/II A FT1 IEEE-1394 Compliant A"
Connector: Generic w/no markings. One edge of the black plastic was curved so that you could orient the end by feel.
Cost: $4.89 + $2.25 shipping.

NOTE:

2) Connector blades had no spring - their tips were in a well that allowed absolutely no transverse movement. I dug out the wells so the tips were now free and the blades were now able to move. Still didn't work.)

3) There was no comparison between these connector blades and the other 2 cables. I suspect that even though I failed to repair 2), a big issue with cheap cables is the connector integrity.

UPDATE:

Did some pinout measurements and found that TWO DIFFERENT wirings were present in the 3 cables:

2) & 3) had the same "crossed" wirings:

/ \\
5 6
3 4
1 2

/ \\
5 6
1 2
3 4

1) had this wiring: (since 3) worked, I assume this wiring is wrong!

identical wiring on both ends:

/ \\
5 6
3 4
1 2
