Work comes first for me too.

Our audio is over SPDIF, so I won't be able to offer any insight on DTS-HD MA bitstreaming. It was there in the March version though, so I'd be shocked if it's been removed.

Where on the LG site is this info? Can someone provide a link?

By the way, I checked the size of this ROM file and the march beta one, and they differ by a few bytes, so there's something different between the two (but it could be something trivial like comment text).

Filename posted: LG_BH_LV221BH_0402F.zip To me, BH02080402F is match.

If you're still in doubt, consider the previous BH200 firmware versions posted by LG. All three had the same zip filename: LG_BH_LV221BH.zip

At least they've added a bit of the firmware version onto the end this time.

Can someone (eg. samsungmaster) confirm this? The Owner's Manual suggests that DD+ is output (using PCM Decode) as normal DD, not DD+. Did an earlier firmware release fix this?

It's important to me because I'm still not able to bitstream any HD DVD output from the BH200 (it just doesn't work). Oddly, bitstream from normal DVD and Blu-ray works perfectly.

There is no direct link.
Go to us.lgservice.com->Click "Device Driver"->Click on "DVD&VIDEO&SET TOP"->Click on
Subject of "[US, Canada Only] Software Update for BH200". The features are listed there.

Thanks.

Yipeey, it looks like it's "almost" the March firmware. We need to confirm:

1. Audio Drop Outs - I have a feeling this won't be fixed entirely!
2. Video Drop Outs - I have a feeling this won't be fixed entirely!
3. SD DVD Green Line - This "should" be included, can someone please check?
4. DD+ 7.1ch. Bitstream output - This "should" be included, can someone please check?
5. Dolby TrueHD 7.1ch outputted over SPDIF (Optical/Coaxial) as 2 Channel - This "should" be included, can someone please check?

Has anyone confirmed these are also fixed? The Green line issue I believe was fixed in the January update, so that should be fine.

When the March firmware was released I tried to get hold of a direct link but LG have designed their site so it's impossible. I spent 20 minutes trying to work out how to get hold of one.

Here is what's included. I've formatted it slightly better for this forum:

1. Bonus View (BD Profile 1.1) Update
2. High Resolution Audio Support Update:
* DTS-HD 7.1Ch output via pass through
* Dolby Digital Plus 7.1Ch output via pass through
* Dolby TrueHD 7.1Ch decode & PCM output via HDMI
3. User selectable Film Mode (1080p 24Hz) has been enabled
4. Firmware update via Network has been enabled

If you look at the wording for DTS-HD it says "Pass through", now we know that means Bitstream. Given that DD Plus has the same wording next to it I'd say it's a given it's also Bitstream.

Neither did the March firmware. The wording as far as DTS-HD goes is the same.

Technically DTS-HD encompasses both DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR (many shorten this confusingly to DTS-HD).

Just updated to the 0402 firmware via usb as the download capability of the player did not find the new fw. No major changes apparent from the March fimware. Still can not use primary pass through from HDDVDs with DD+ or TrueHD as all I get recognized by my Pioneer Elite 92 is PCM 192 Stereo with no audible sounds other than something that sounds like a helicopter. If I set the player to PCM multichannel then I have no issues and have PCM sound available.

Would be nice to have the player actually play the proper codecs without having to keep getting ito the setup menu to change the audio output between BD and HDDVD.

a little disappointed....

Just upgraded to new firmware. Noticed a few fixes:

1. The Fog HD DVD UK has no more constant info window. (Probably holds true for all Studio Canal releases)

2. No more "motorboating" on DD+ tracks

3. True HD and DTS Master properly bitstreamed

4. No green line on DVD's (Although 4x3 is still stretched)

Setup:
BH200 to Onkyo 605 via HDMI
Audio set to pass-thru

However I've had a chance now to watch a few more movies and I've discovered DD+ now just outputs noise where it worked prior to the upgrade.
I've tested on only two disks so far. Roy Orbison Black and White Night, and Serenity. Both HD-DVD format.
If I set the BH200 to PCM Multi-Ch, I get DD+ but no TrueHD.
If I set it to Primary Pass-Thru, I get TrueHD but no DD+.

Is anybody else seeing this or is my issue unique?

Update: I tried a few more HD-DVD's and without exception, DD+ just produces a ratchet sounding static noise.
DD 5.1 on SD DVD's is OK, and Uncompressed PCM 5.1 on Blu-Ray discs is also OK.
For whatever it's worth, my AVR displays "Stereo 192 kHz PCM whenever I try to listen to a DD+ audio track.

Same issue I am still having, is this a Pioneer AV Receiver only issue?

I've updated the first post to reflect:

* The 02/04/08 firmware: BH02080402F (2008-04-02)
* The Official Change Log
* I've also moved info on the March firmware to the second post

I've also e-mailed the mods to update the thread title.

That's fantastic news thanks. The Studio Canal issue is particulary good news for me.

We just need to confirm if Dolby TrueHD over SPDIF is still converted to DTS 5.1?

Exactly the same problem I've been having with my Marantz SR7002. I was starting to think it was an issue with the Marantz (either model or unit) but if it's showing up with a Pioneer then it's clearly related to the BH200.

The problem appeared with the driver update to 0702. If there was a way of getting our hands on 0701 to roll back, it might solve our problem.

Maybe Pioneer as my Onkyo only gave me the motorboating on a DD+ decoded directly. If I applied Dolby EX to the DD+ soundtrack, the noise went away. After the latest firmware, DD+ sent directy to my Onkyo without any DSP applied gives me NO motorboating.

Also, the new firmware did not contain the 702 drive update. My player is still at 701.

The final page of this review includes a chart of the audio "capabilities" of the original BH200 (limitations is more like it):
http://www.ultimateavmag.com/hddiscp...00/index2.html

Proper DD+ decoding results in Multi-Channel PCM, and that's what the BH200 produced.

Yes, but the Owner's Manual says it's decoded and output as DD over PCM, not DD+. Can someone actually confirm that it is DD+?

The Soapbox Kid:
Well, the manual wasn't entirely correct (as noted in the review)...

Seems highly unlikely to me for a player to properly decode multi-channel Dolby TrueHD (as the BH200 has done since the March update), and then be unable to decode DD+.

Besides, DD+ decoding is a base requirement of the HD DVD platform. Same for Dolby TrueHD (but only in 2.0). The BH200 met all the minimum requirements for the HD DVD logo, so DD+ decoding must have there in the original release.

The March update enhanced Dolby TrueHD capabilities, and bitstreaming of all hi-def codecs.

I was actually referring to the absence of any reference to DD+ being decoded internally but as stated by oilblue this has been possible since release so it wouldnt be mentioned in the list of firmware fixes.

@ The Soapbox Kid, where in the manual is it stated DD+ is decoded to DD? The sound matrix at the end of the manual only lists PCM 5.1 as the output if DD+ is the source format.

With the recent updates however, the manual is probably not the best reference.

Do you have the sampling frequency set to 192kHz? Try changing that to the lower values to see if that makes a difference. Audio on hi-def is usually at 48kHz anyway, so you won't lose anything.

Doesn't really make sense given that bitstreaming BD works OK...but it's something relatively easy to try. Course that means you probably tried different sampling frequencies anyway. Just thought I'd mention it.

Believe me i have tried every conceivable variable at my disposal to try to get this to work. Hope LG staff is reading and can provide a solution.

192kHz is part of the problem though, as it's limited to PCM stereo. From Wikipedia:
Quote:

HD DVD discs support encoding in up to 24-bit/192 kHz for two channels, or up to eight channels of up to 24-bit/96 kHz encoding.

Either it's getting introduced by the player in error, or your receiver "recognizes" it in error.

So, with this new firmware, try setting the BH200 sampling frequency to the lowest value (48kHz). Just for kicks.

If that doesn't work, is there a way to limit your receiver to a lower sampling frequency?

I think it is the problem for both player and receiver. I encountered similar problem with my old Panny receiver receiving PCM 96kHz (it is capable of 96KHz) from Samsung DVD-Audio/SACD player. The problem is that the receiver can't determine what frequency the source audio is. I have to press the input selection button on remote again to force it to sync up. I have no idea how player and receiver communicate to determine which PCM frequency is used.

I am set for 192khz with no problem. I am feeding an Onkyo 805.

The setting is a max setting and should be set to whatever your receiver will handle. The Elite 92 should be fine at 192khz.

Hey all. I owned a BD-UP5000 back in December/January before selling it, and am looking to get back in the game shortly, with either the BH200 or another 5000. A couple questions on the BH200.

1. I see that the newest firmware allows it to decode TrueHD. This is good. However, can the player decode 7.1 DD+ and 7.1 DTS-HD (not MA) as well? I thought this was ambiguous as the firmware update stated only bitstreaming support added. I'm assuming it could do this before, but am not certain.

2. How loud is it?

3. Is the boot time as quick as the 5000?

4. For anyone who has used both, how is the DVD scaling as compared to the 5000? I expect the 5000 to have an edge, though the differences should be very small.

5. Any current issues with long pauses or skips at layer changes or chapter breaks?

Thanks!

The setting is a max setting and should be set to whatever your receiver will handle. The Elite 92 should be fine at 192khz.

Clearly though, something is *not* working...so what's the harm in trying a different setting?

I also recognize it's a maximum setting. Point is, the two devices aren't communicating properly. I don't know how they settle on a sampling frequency, but if there's a chance this could affect their handshake, then I think it's a step that should be attempted. It won't wreck anything, and it's a simple switch.

Eventually though, a firmware update by either Pioneer or LG is needed. Or both.
