Looking to pick up a BD-UP5000 for my parents (I already have one) and it seems that refurbs are about the only way to get one. I don't buy refurb, but maybe I'm being to hard. Success stories? Horror stories? Please share.

Bought one the beginning of June and it has been great for me. Just make sure you try some of the problematic Fox BR titles on it (Sunshine, Die Hard...). If it plays those, then it should be fine.

Thanks,

Jim

Be careful on the refurbs I bought one and it was terrible it's pretty much luck of the draw on getting a good one whether it be used or new. Good Luck!

I have a refub. Besides for a small dent on the top cover near the back it is perfect. Works fine, plays all fox BD+ movies fine.

I think most of these refurbs are simply customer returns. There were a lot of people who brought them back when they found out TrueHD was 2 channel only. I'm sure a lot of people brought them back when they had disk compatibility issues too. Neither of these are problems with the player itself and both issues have been fixed with the latest firmware update.

Format Neutral: Samsung BD-UP5000
HD DVDs: 41
Blu-rays: 24

I bought a refurb of Ebay. It did come with the Samsung 90 day refurb warrant. Unfortunately I had to use the warranty the day after I received the unit because it wouldn't play Fox BR titles. That seems to be the most common problems with this player. Since I finally got it back from the repair center it has worked perfectly. I haven't had a problem with any type of disc except the NIN HD DVD.

You might want to check on the warranty Samsung issues for refurbs and I'm also sure there is a return policy with the place you are buying it from. I'd suggest you calling a few Circuit City locations, if there are any around you, and check if they have any new or open box/display units for sale. New ones are harder to find and run $349.99 while open box/display will run anywhere from $220 - $290. CC offers a 30 return policy AND states it has the same 1 year warranty from the manufacturer as if you purchased a new sealed item.

Eoutletcanada is selling off UP5000 refurbs for CAD $299. I got one last week with no problems, it was a March 2008 build date and they had already installed the firmware. This is my second player, and I'm quite pleased with this one. All the packing and plastic were in the box, as if this was brand new. No signs that it has ever been used. Electronics Outlet also offered a 3-year extended warranty.

I received my refurbished one yesterday, well its going back. It upgraded firmware fine, I watched one BD POtC At world's end, then popped in LOTR SD and it wouldn't load, wouldn't eject the disk, nothing, after sever hours messing with it I was able to eject the disk, and I tried re-installing the firmware, well it locked up on that also, and I had to leave the player unplugged overnight in order to get it to eject the firmware disk. Even with the drive empty it won't load to the Samsung menu. I've tried the factory reset and everything I can think of, and read here, so I've asked for a RMA from the seller, hopefully they'll make things right.

I think your best bet would probably be Amazon (used) or finding an open box at BB/CC/etc. I've always been a little sketchy of ebay items.

(I just put mine up for sale here on the classifieds, btw)

Bought one on Amazon for $325, supposedly restored to "new condition" by the factory. Well, it's at the Samsung repair center now. Wouldn't play HD DVD's at all, but has no problem with any BR or SD titles, including Sunshine.
Also, not quite "new" condition, had some scratches on the back, but that really won't bother me if the thing actually works. At least so far the Samsung folks have been pretty easy to deal with. I've heard some horror stories that have me a little worried.

I just received an update on the repair, they are waiting for parts. I'm going to be plenty peeved if they try to substitute a BR only player.

Bought one off of eoutletCanada for $299 and it would freeze constantly during playback on all types of disks, BD, HD, and SD. Sent it back and am awaiting a repalcement. It truly appears to be luck of the draw.

Also bought off eoutletcanada. Get the no disc error. Mine also came with couple of dings. Sent them an email and never heard again. Kinda crooked, I think. I would take caution with their refurb units. Went with Samsung service so don't have to deal with cross border issues as well.
