I think that 429 number is low. A list I found that was accurate in February shows 436, but it doesn't include imports I have in my collection--for example, The Prestige and Fantastic Four. I'm thinking the real number worldwide is right around 600 and some.

Actually, there are a few people around now who have 'full collections' who could probably tell us for sure.

HD DVD Stats isn't that accurate. (They don't even list the nearly 100 adult HD DVD titles.)

is a much more accurate list. The total number of titles is near 1000. Several people here on AVS own more than 439 unique titles.

Hey, allargon, thanks for the clarification. I thought the 400 number was too small. Now you got me wondering what the current list of BR titles is...?

TDB is completely off, it's ridiculously low. Back in January I read ~800 titles 'til date.

Was just a response to say that Blu-ray HAS surpassed HD DVD.....It was implied in the post I quoted that Blu-ray might have not yet "reached" HD DVD as far as titles released go...I usually try to stay away from the HD DVD vs Blu-ray mess I am so sick and tired of it....

Sorry, I wasn't trying to dig up a mess either. I just remembered reading something recently that said 600-some titles for BR. I wondered if that was more than what HD DVD had or not. Regardless, together they are still a far cry from VHS or DVD.

I think this is totally possible. I have one reason: HDCD. Wasn't very popular but still had some support in receivers and players, and it did require extra hardware.

Indeed. The same can be said of Nuon. One can still buy "Nuon Enhanced" DVD Players for all 8 Nuon games ever released. It requires special hardware as well and for a massive 8 title pay-off, not 18, not 80 and definitely not the 800+ that HD DVD has to offer.

The HD DVD library is established and was never as CP/DRM happy as BD so there would be no need to release new firmware for HD DVD once there is an established baseline to work from. Most of it would depend on the hardware costs and complexity. Yes right now a single-chip solution would be expensive and would demand a great deal of work. Still as the hardware and software in BD players gets more powerful and more sophisticated the idea of making BD players that can also play HD DVDs as a value added option becomes much more appealing for manufacturers.

I remember Nuon. I saw a Samsung DVD Player article about it. I never knew any hardware actually got released though.

Yep. Samsung released at least two Nuon enhanced DVD Player in the US and a couple in Europe as well. There were also players by Toshiba and RCA plus it was a feature in Motorola's Streamaster 5000 "Digital DNA" set-top box.
