They are fairly evenly matched. But my vote goes to the LG BH200 for a couple of reasons: It sounds like it will be updated to BD profile 2.0, and it can be made region-free for both DVD and Blu-ray (HD DVD never had any region restrictions).

But if you need analog audio outs, the Samsung BD-UP5000 is better for you.

+1 on BH200. It is working great for me and the price can't be beat right now. Crossing my fingers for Profile 2.0 and Netflix streaming support when the BD300 comes outs.

No offence but there are zillion threads specifically already asking this very question. Please try searching for them .

In short:

LG BH200:

* Multiregion for SD DVD and BD
* The ability to play PAL SD DVDs

Samsung BD-UP5000:

* Analogue outputs
* Reon Upscaler (although how much better it is to the LG's QDEO us dubious)

Both have a similar number of bugs (see separate thread) and problem discs (again see dedicated threads). Both use the same decoding chip and as such there really isn't that much between them. I needed SD DVD and BD Multiregion capability so went with the BH200.

I wouldn't buy either on the basis of BD Profile 2.0. There is absolutely no guarantee either will ever get it, especially not now. Members really should stop bringing that one up IMO.

^They just got their players, Brad, and they want to buhlieve. Cut them some slack.

Owning them both, it doesn't matter which way you go as long as you don't get a defective player from either camp.

They are both equal...so I'd say pick up whichever one you can find cheaper.

I've been busy and haven't been following much with the firmware so I have a few questions:

Did Samsung ever fix the jaggies on 1080p24 on Dreamwork HD DVD titles?
And does the newest LG firmware disable reading of BD-R and BD-RE discs?

Thanks!

I appreciate your posts. I know about the search function and before I started this thread, I waded through numerous pages and still had no definitive answer-now I do. I am going to get the LG. I can get it brand new and it sounds as though the Sammy has not implemented the Reon very well. Which by itself is very sad. IMO, The best upscaling player for me was the XA2. Thanks again.

From whom? I've heard maybe 1 or 2 claims on this. Others feel it looks comparable to the XA2. You won't know until you see one for yourself.

Well I no longer have the Samsung BD-UP5000, but I'm 99.9% sure that it was stretching 4:3 SD DVD's, which the XA2 doesn't do.

Other than that, I agree that I can't see a difference between the upscaling of the XA2 and the BD-UP5000

Correct, it stretches 4:3 SD DVDs...I wasn't debating that, more or less the upscaling quality.

Well, if it can be quickly answered here with a "yes" or "no", then the question as to which is better can be quickly answered as well.

And if it was easy to find the answer without searching through hundreds of pages altogether, then I wouldn't be asking the question in the first place. The forum has become quite hard to find info and that is the reason I haven't visited it much lately.

There hasn't been a Samsung firmware release since you were last active here unfortunately.

Any advantage to having the Samsung player if you own a Samsung HDTV?

I was at BB today and they had the Samsung BD-UP5000 on "clearance" for around $530 or $540. That at least $130 more plus tax! From everything I have read, it doesn't appear to be worth that difference. Are people finding the Samsung cheaper elsewhere?

I've bought two open box Samsung BD-UP5000's at Best Buy for $299 each (no remote, but that can be ordered for $35). But that was a couple months ago...not sure how many are out there anymore.

I have read this in some of the threads here. Again, you would know more about it than me thats why i started this thread. Thanks again for your input...I can get the lg new for $400...and the sammy refurb for 379......i think new is the way to go then square trade the warranty.

The region hacks and the better mfr support makes the LG far superior to the Samsung IMO.

BB still has the LG but they are going fast around here. I tried it out and I liked the way the emblem lighted up depending on what disc was in the machine. It bitstreams and does 1080p/24 for both formats so I think that will be my choice.

I have the new Denon 1909 receiver so I guess it doesn't matter which one I get either. I plan to pick one of them up next week but it doesn't seem the Samsung has any advantage over the LG if you have a newer receiver that decodes the new modes.

I just wish one of them handled DVD-Audio.

Have both of these player been discontinued or are they still being made? Am I on the clock as to finding one? My local BB had a ton of the Samsungs but as I stated before, they were $130 more in cost.

Both the BH200 and the 5000 have been discontinued. So there may not be much time left.

As to DVD-Audio, keep an eye out for Oppo's newly announced Blu-ray player. SACD/DVD-A support is not confirmed yet, but their other players are universal . . . universally good that is!
