The LG may have a USB port, but it's not getting upgraded to 2.0. That's why LG is issuing refunds.

Format Neutral: Samsung BD-UP5000
HD DVDs: 41
Blu-rays: 24

I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info.

Not only that, LG also doesn't offer any more firmware updates to address a few recent BD disc playback problem, unlike Samsung that actually offered firmware 1.4 just for that.

I also own them both...from the little use the BH200 has received, I still prefer the 5000.

On top of that, even their FIRST gen player from 2006 got a firmware update earlier this month: http://pages.samsung.com/us/bluraysupport/support.html

LG is not showing a similar due diligence.

That's good to hear and they even gave you a shipping label. I wasn't as fortunate with one of my units when I sent it in.

I agree, Samsung was very nice about returning it, but 21 days after they received the player I was offered either a refund or a BD2550. I chose the refund and found a floor sample at my local Best Buy for $299, which was less than I paid for the refurb.

The moral of the story is, I don't think they're still making parts for these things, and I doubt they really have the ability to repair them. I wish you luck, I love this player, and it was definitely worth the hassle to find one.

I do agree that they likely will not have certain components, especially the drive. Although I had a really bad experience in that my brand new 5K used for just about a month died on me and they replaced with a meager 1500, I did read reports on here that some members still go theirs repaired at the California location. That was about 2 months ago, so things could've changed now. Strangely enough, I live in CA and Samsung had me send mine to NJ?!?

I wonder if they would use old parts from returned 5K in their repairs? From a PR stand point, they'll never admit it, but would they do it if parts were there and available to use rather than give a replacement or a refund?

Hmmmmm.......that's too bad. I wonder if I should have sent the remote and manual back then - didn't think to do that. Well, if I end up with the BD2550 I would be okay with that. I already have an HD-DVD player, so being able to stream Pandora & Netfilx along with my blu-ray playback and keeping my 7.1 analog ins would be nice. Still am hoping they can fix it. For what it is worth, mine was sent to California.

Good luck ndurantz, I'd like to hear an update if yours does get fixed. You should've kept the remote and manual, I'm sure someone would've bought it from you. Be sure to get those items back when/if Samsung sends the unit to you.

Another good reason to keep the manual and remote is if you happen to find a good floor sample somewhere they often dont have the accessories, which is what happened in my case.

Sorry. Guess I should be a little more clear in my posts. I DID keep the remote and manual, so I guess that was a good move on my part! I will keep all you posted on the progress. In the meantime, I am hooking up my old Toshiba HD-A3 to hold me over. Nice to have fall back for upconversion and the occasional HD movie!

My harmony 880 takes care of the missing remote issue ,but it I put one of my spares in another room I'll buy a harmony 550 or 520 instead of spending $35.00 + shipping for a up5000 remote.

In the BH-200 thread Samsungmaster has indicated that LG has a FW fix for some of the recent BD releases, but that there is at least one outstanding bug for Madagascar that may hold it up, or they may release the current FW and do another later for Madagascar.

Just reporting what was written there, I really don't know...

Why would someone named Samsungmaster, be posting info regarding Samsung FW releases in the BH200 thread .
If I had inside info, I would at least take 5 minutes to post it in the proper threads so owners could have some information.

BTW, the BD-P1400 just got a fw release today, so hopfully the 5000 really is next on the list.

Samsungmaster purportedly works for LG at a level that he can fly to Korea and visit the factory there. He did so recently and returned with a report of a firmware(s?) being in the works for the BH200. He seems reliable.

His forum name is a dig at Samsung, I think.

Out of all their players, the BD-UP5000 received its last firmware update the longest time ago. I would normally say we aren't due until May 2009 based on usual 6-month windows but here's to hoping this influx of player updates bodes well for a more proactive Samsung software engineering team (HD DVD playback included!!!) and a subsequently sooner than expected update.

I suspect it was just a typo, but just in case:

Samsungmaster is posting info about LG FW releases in the BH200 thread.

Thanks Richard

Has there been any recent word or even a small hint at a version 1.5 which would fix the 4:3 stretching and the “bonus view” icon bugs since this version didn't fix them?
