Several websites have these units up for pre-order right now so I think these may be releasing in the near future(within a month)

I don't trust any of the websites but it won't be long before Amazon has these up.

I don't know. I called them and they said by the 31st. I think I am going to call them back and cancel. Why did they charge my card then?

Could be as simple as a worng SKU number in the computer - they could be shipping you a 60" plasma -

Just have them contact shipping to ensure that it is the actual unit - oh, then get your butt back here and report!

i ordered one yesterday online and i checked this morning and they already charged my card. i called them and asked if they had them in stock or what and they told me that they had 1 coming in on the 31st. i asked them why the charged my card without having one to sell to me they told me it was their policy. i then asked what was the estimated time they said they had no idea and it was tentative. so i am just going to cancel my order.

I LOVE my PS3, but if this player gets good reviews and comes down in price a little, I'm definitely picking one up.

I pulled my order to. They don't seem reliable enough. I also have changed my mind on the 5000. Since my XA2 will soon have almost everything due to firmwares there is no point spending this much on a DUO. I will try their 2400 though. At 500 why not?

I see the XA2 on sales at Best Buy/Magnolia. I have the Sony S300 and like it. But I want bitstream HD audio for my Onkyo 805.

How's the XA2? Do you think 1080/24 is really coming via firmware?

I've used onsale.com alot for various things - I've bought several Harmony remotes off them when they had them at unbelievable prices. I've never had any trouble with them. I've even made returns to them without a headache - although i don't know what their current policy is. I'd order but I now get charged sales tax from them unless I ship it to my brother. Seems like a good deal to me.

Looks like it also plays BD-R and BR-RE contrary to what I've read previously. 1080p/24 for both was kind of up in the air until now too.

Joe just curious as to why the 2400 over the 1400 if you've already got the XA2? Does the 2400 have more feeatures besides the Reon chip over the 1400?

Thanks Richard

I believe Toshiba announced a while back that the XA2 and A20 would receive a 1080/24 update, so I think it's a really good possibility.

I predict you'll change your mind back.

I'm just gonna be patient and wait for the official release.

I doubt it. I called samsung an spoke with a higher up who was not sure about the High Bit rate audio over HDMI. He kept saying oh yeah, it will pass bitstream... Anyway, so far it looks like only the 2400 has that spec included. I don't see the need to spend 800 or so on a DUo at this time. If I didn't already own the XA2 then maybe. But not with the great firmwares coming for the XA2. I would just assume get a better Blu ray player with the bells and whistles to match it...

Joerod, do you really think Samsung would not provide similar bit rates on the UP5000 yet have it on the 2400? Wish the spec sheet was out for the 5000. I am going to wait a few weeks to see what shakes out. However, if I find an XA2 at Best Buy I may grab it.

I'm gonna be keeping an eye out on the XA2s as well, my local BB has 4 + a floor model they are willing to part with but not much of a discount at this time. If they have another price drop I may bite, I have to imagine if they don't move them by the time the new 3 series toshibas (or the Onkyo if Magnolia carries it) come out they will lower the price again. I do know that I would love to wait until the Samsung 5000 comes out before making a decision on the XA2.

I really am excited to hear more about the 5000 though. I can't wait to see what kind of load times it has. Also how well the analog outputs work, if they work good I think I'd remove my SACD/DVD-A player until I get a new pre/pro next year. A one player solution just seems so nice and I really could care less about Blu-Ray spec 1.1 so I have no concerns there.

Thanks Richard

I don't understand what would make them change their minds about BD profile 1.1. They said it earlier in a press release before that it would and now they just changed their minds. They must have decided to not put in the memory systems or I guess I should say "hard drives" for downloadable content.

No I don't think that's it. It's possible they are having some trouble getting the bugs out of the system. We also don't know for sure what chip ended up going in it (I think it's the Broadcom 7440B, which supports PiP; but haven't seen that confirmed). The Sammy 1200 (existing BD player) already has been confirmed to have 256 MB memory (which is the requirement for profile 1.1), and already has an internet connection (required for profile 2.0; but that also mandates 1 gig memory). If it doens't have 1.1 at launch I'll bet it will get it via firmware update, assuming it has the correct hardware (which none of the existing BD standalone players do).

I'd just like to see Samsung release more updates for their players.

Joerod -- I concur on the DUO. A lot of us were expecting the 5000 to be fully Blu-Ray compliant as well as fully HD-DVD compliant AND have bitstream TrueHD and DTS HD Master out as well. From what I'm reading it will be released BEFORE 31 Oct because Samsung didn't make it BD 1.1. Hard to say if the fault was the BDA for dragging on the specs, the chip manufacturer, or Samsung.

Back to waiting for a COMPLETE dual player. My guess is not before sometime next year. (Unless Warner Bros jumps to HD-DVD exclusive and everyone moves over to just making HD DVD players!)

That sums up exactly how I feel. They aren't even sure about the HBR yet and about the compliance. I do not want to buy an expensive DUO if it will be outdated the minute it shows up at my doorstep...

Who the heck cares about BD profile 1.1? Not me. I just want to watch the movie. Those bonuses where the director comments over the movie (which I assume would be a major application of BD profile 1.1) are totally wasted on me.

Why be angry at Samsung over 1.1 when there are NO 1.1 players available and the only one annouced (Denon) is delayed and costs $2,000. For $1,000 or less, give me a 1.0 dual format Samsung player any day!

I feel the same way. Even when I buy a dual-format player and pick up some HD-DVD's, I doubt I even use any of that stuff. My home theater is for replicating the theater experience at home. I don't seem to remember seeing PIP at my local cinema.

It just scares me thinking how many of these things Samsung would sell if they priced it at $699 or $799.

I understand it has the Reon chip, but seriously, since the XA2 is now $499 at Best Buy, and Sammy 1200 is $499, realistically the most Samsung should charge for this unit is $999, which I suppose will be the street price after a couple of months.

But still, I just think they really missed an opportunity here to get some serious sales numbers.

Agreed. If they released it tomorrow at somewhere around $500-$600, I'd order one right then and there.

I am not worried about the compliance factor I am concerned about getting a player that will pass HBR. I know it is not truly needed but I am on a quest to see my onkyo 905 light up saying Dolby TrueHD...

From the brochure:

HDMI V1.3
Experience richer color and sound. The BD-UP5000 offers HDMI v1.3, which enables broader
bandwidth AV data transmission. It supports deep color, higher resolution and new compressed
audio formats.

Sounds like it has all the necessaries to me. The authoring on the discs themselves may not allow it but that won't be the player's fault.
