Gamma effects the video that is displayed from any format, so it actually matters to everyone.

I would love for someone to explain to me why Panasonic can come out with a player that can do all the audio codecs (and do them properly) for a price of $500 when these dual format players can't do it at twice the price.

Additionally, these players have had more developmental time than the Panasonic did. So is this just a question of smarter engineers at Panasonic?

The 2 channel limitation is insane. Just who do LG and Samsung think are their target demographics here? This isn't the $100 HD-DVD player market that John Q. Walmart is going to pick-up with the latest edition of Larry the CableGuy's stand up routine.

This is the $800-1000 AVphile playground. These people are GOING to have the correct system. I dont' care if it's .01% of the general public who has the proper gear- you're NOT going to sell 100,000 units at this price point ANYWHERE. So if it's your flagship, then have the damn performance REFLECT that.

I expect it from LG, but I'll be really, really disappointed if we get the shaft from Samsung. I will withhold final judgement until someone has a physical unit in hand and can actually report. But I'm sure as heck NOT going to pre-order at this point.

That's extremely debatable given the BD30 can't decode ANY of the advanced codecs, only pass them along. IMO, Panasonic is sucking pond water compared to a cheaper Toshiba A35 which decodes TrueHD and can bitstream everything.

You guys are mistakenly worrying about the 5000 and that whole "2-channel" TrueHD. There is no way this thing is coming out without full TrueHD support.

Iam pretty sure the BH200 will ouput all formats as bitstream, it is decoding to PCM that is proably limited to two channel. Comparison to the BD30 is ridiculous since this cannot decode ANY high res formats.

I just posted the following post in the Onkyo 705 thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1436

Has anyone here read anything contrary to the latest news from Home Theater magazine? If this news is indeed true, has anyone read (from any other source) just how long it may be before the BD-5000 is actually released?

Old news and is highly questionable seeing as the lead time for stories is so far in advance. The Sammy has already been delayed a few times (Oct, Nov, Now December) The interview with someone from Samsung (in dealerscope) just happened recently and is on its way to US retailers as we speak. It should be here within the next few weeks supposedly before Christmas.

Yes, I realize the news from Home Theater magazine didn't come "hot off the press," but as I mentioned it was in the "THIS JUST IN" section, so I'm assuming it's the last news they received before going to press.

Having said that, I just checked Amazon and they are still taking preorders and listing a release date of January 15th. Time will tell if this holds up.

Thanks!

I have never been one to jump on the "1st generation bandwagon," but if Samsung has taken care of the glitches that were cited in Sound & Vision's review of the combo player last month, I may just take the plunge.

I still do have one concern though. It has been discussed in another thread that the BD-5000 may only pass Dolby TrueHD in 2 channel stereo and so far no one has been able to disprove this. I can't imagine this being true, for even the lower end Toshiba HD DVD players (I have the A2) will pass the TrueHD in multi-channel. Does anyone here have a definitive word on this?

IMO, LG has better quality, but it's like comparing a Dodge Aspen to a Plymouth Volare. They're just not all that different from each other in the grand scheme of things.

I just dumped my LG BH200 after 1 week of owning it. The simple fact that it wouldn't output Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA is pathetic! What a joke! With my new Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver, that was just an unacceptable feature that was missing. And since the Sammy 5000 is the exact same, both with no firmware updates in sight, I went ahead and purchased the A35 for $349 and the Panny BD30 for $399. It came out cheaper than both dual format players and does everything I need it to. I tested it out last night and heard DTS-HD MA on the Panny and TrueHD on the A35! Not to mention that they both put out 24fps, another thing that the LG "claims" it does, but doesn't.

Shame on LG!

I love my calibrated display!

I'll be candid. In no way, shape, or form do I want two distinct players. What a pain. Two remotes, or two units the do the same thing into one over-populated universal remote.

Less is more. I've slowly switched ALL my components over to HDMI. I run them all into a Monoprice 4 x 2 HDMI switch, then to either the Denon 3808 or to the plasma. Thus I can watch the same sources on the projector (thus the Denon) or the plasma (thus the direct). I can also use the Denon with the plasma as a result.

Streamlined. Got rid of Comcast STB, use TivoHD now. Got rid of 2nd DVD player as well. Very few cables, thanks to HDMI, and the "cupboard" is barer than it was before.

I'm happy to sit out the dual format growing pains. I was on the verge of buying one or the other, but with all the reports, and then some hands on with a friends Samsung, I will happily pass. DVDS look very good on the 50" plasma. and sound excellent.

Not many movies I want to see currently, so why jump on now?

I've probably owned the BH200 the longest of anyone on this board but I think I am about to do just what you did. I can be patient and wait if they would commit to something but they have not even done that. Since the player may never work the way it "should" I can't see a reason to stick with it.

Anyone want to buy an LG BH200?

Hey CVC,
I just picked up the Onkyo 705, And see that you are running the A35 & BD30.
How do you like those? See my gear list in my profile. I am really looking for the best possible sound from both formats "DTS MA & True DTS HD" Do you have a 5.1 setup or 7.1 setup??

GOT DTS HD MASTER AUDIO?

I'm new to this whole confusing mess, got a Toshiba HD-E10 for Christmas but it's gone back as I ended up having three units in a row developing errors and proving very disappointing. I only got a few HD-DVD movies, a number exclusive to the format, but with the news about WB am thinking I'm going to get a dual-format player and these two - the Samsung and LG - are the ones I'm trying to decide between but the talk of codecs and other stuff is above my head.

I'm trying to find out if either player is region-free when it comes to BD? The LG is available in the UK now online but I was told it's region A... which means it wouldn't play UK-issued BDs? Am I right?

It's hard to believe BD is winning the format war when consumers like myself are finding out the specs constantly change, the players differ enormously, and discs bought a year from now might not give full access to features on older players, which frankly is a real issue for people to get their heads around.

Anyone help with advice on a region-free BD player, if not one of these multi-format devices then I'd go for a HD-DVD player and a BD player.

Thanks!

On the video side alone, Samsung appears to have issues with a sheer crapload of titles. I mean, based on what owners report it won't play them - period.
I have yet to come across a title that LG combo wouldn't play. Sure, it does have mood swings; yet eveything ends up being played back eventually.
A couple initial hiccups aside, it did play the latest Bourne movie without much fuss. And now it plays that title as if it were a nothing-fancy BR release.
Go figure

Before I sold it, my 5000 played every title I gave it. About 10 each of HD-DVD and BD and a number of DVD's. In that respect, I thought it was great.

I havew had a few issues, but nothing I would call a true problem. For the most part I have been able to watch almost every movie I have put into it. Man of the issues that I see cant be duplicated across the board, so some owners will have issues where others wont. I would still recommend the Sammy for those that need a dual format solution. especially for those that dont have the room for 2 players or dont have a receiver that is able to use HDMI for audio,

I thought I read in another of your replies that you had originally tried 4 BD discs?

I tried 4 seperate HD DVD titles (Clerks II, Top Gun, Aeon Flux and disc one of ST TOS).

I have (had at that point) 4 BD discs. I tried Cars quickly and had no issues. I then watched The Simpsons and had a couple of visual glitches.

Then I boxed it up, and the rest is history.....

My A35 is on its way and Amazon has just notified me that the PS3 is about to fly.

Mits 73835, Denon X4000, Emotiva UPA5 (triggered), Wharfedale Pacific Evo 40s, CS, 10s, the internet, a NAS drive, a TiVo Series 3 and an Oppo 103 (bye bye PS3). There's also a Wii, but we don't talk about that...
