Does this player support converting the advanced audio formats (e.g., DD+ and TruHD) to 1.5 Mbps DTS for optical and coax connections like the Toshiba HD DVD players do? What about PCM tracks on BD's? Any 5.1 DTS conversions for those?

I don't know about the region-free, but yes, it does play VideoCD. In fact, it also plays Super VideoCD.

THAT IS GOOD NEWS and it does get Samsung under
the wire of shipping a 1.0 Player before the 10/31/07
cutoff date!

Thanks for talking to the monkey

I would believe this player should comply with BD profile 1.1 since it needs dual decoders for HD DVD compliance.

Will it upconvert SD DVD's as well as the Toshiba XA2? Doesn't it use the same Reon chip?

Even if it does have the same Reon chip, there is no guarantee that its implemented the same.

A good previous example is of the Faroudja chip. Some manufacturers did a better job implemented the chip that others.

Samsung 64F8500, Panasonic 65VT50, Oppo 95, Tivo Roamio for OTA, Dish VIP722, Marantz AV8801 preamp, Rotel Amps, Atlantic Tech 8200 speakers, Seaton Submersive HP, Calman 5, Chromapure, Accupel DVG-5000, i1Display3pro, i1pro2, eecolor colorbox.

I would expect it would do a very good job; the Sammy 1200 which used the Reon got excellent marks in the secrets tests; pretty much the same as XA2.

Can this player do vertical stretch on hi-def dvd's ? I want to do a CIH setup but my projector cannot do anamorphic stretch and I don't want to buy an external scaler.

For me (and many others) the million dollar question is "how good is the reon implement".

If this thing can match the Xa2 on Reon implementation it could really cause waves here at AVS. Ironcally I think it's the SD performance of the XA2 which sells a lot of people on the XA2 and that format with it. Because if anything else you have a fantastic sd player when the format war ends. But if the 5000 can match the XA2 - this could be the bulletproof HDM solution for folks who aren't just looking for the cheapest players.

Anyone know if it'll play SACD or DVD-A? Doubt it, but that would be nice. Also, that link doesn't specify how many channels TrueHD it will decode, is it 5.1 or 7.1 and is it the same for HD DVD and blu-ray?

It will use the same implementation of the Reon as the current 1200 and future 2400 players. The 1200 is as good as the X2.

I thought i had read on here a general consensus that the XA2 eeked out a bit better performance than the 1200.

I called Onsale.com

The interesting thing the rep told me was that they were set to receive 50 units as early as the end of September, with a confirmed small replenishment of stock (10 more) in early October. They mentioned that only those that called in orders would be placed on the "priority list" to get the first batch of players.

Of course, it could just be a ploy to order over the phone, but I'm happy to oblige if it will get me the player even a bit sooner. At the same time, if the shipping schedule gets pushed out, or I find a better outlet, I'll just cancel my order.

I've had good luck with PCMall in the past, let's hope that trend continues.

The XA2 has more picture controls - namely sharpness type settings which some people may prefer (I really didn't when I owned the Reon-based Denon 2930 which had even more than the XA2). But, as far as sheer deinterlacing and scaling, they are identical.

What kind of "sharpness type" settings ?

The 1200 has Noise Reduction and Sharpness settings/adjustments for the REON. I can only assume the 5000 will have the same or more.

Did they charge your credit card? Or do they wait until shipment?

I just ordered from Onsale and the rep assured me that my card would not be charged until the item shipped. He also stated I could cancel anytime before shipment.

ETA was first or second week of Oct.. We'll see .

Ditto for me - did the same. Said Onsale would get them Oct. 1, based on input from Samsung as of Sept. 12. Not sure how that's going to make these players 1.1 compliant, though (since it's before 10/31), maybe firmware updates?

Anyway we will indeed see. . . .40-50 of us will either be happy or not as of the first week of October.

Just got off the phone with a friend that works at BB. The computer is telling him that the BD-UP5000 won't be available until 10/21. Also, the MSRP is listed at $799. I would take this with a grain of salt, as pre-release information for products in BB's system can often be wrong. Nonetheless, I was surprised to hear that.

Whoever gets theirs first has a duty to hook it up quickly and give it a good run through and post their thoughts for us to see. I'd like to know if it has any hiccups on HD DVD combos, my A2 plays them flawlessly and I'd hate to get a unit that doesn't.

Remember, it's your DUTY!
