Thanks for the heads-up apohis. Your link is dead because you included the "eek" in the URL (see here). What information do you have that "BD-UP5000 now at some Best Buy"?

$799. Not bad. I'm tempted to order one and see what happens.

Edit: Placed order and says scheduled to be delivered between 11/7 and 11/20. We shall see.

Finally available!

I wish website's specs were more informative... Is it profile 1.0, 1.1?? Should we assume that since it's available after 10-31-07 that it's 1.1?

Does it have the same specs that we've been reading all along or is something different now since it was delayed?

Frankly, while this is interesting information, I wouldn't make any assumptions myself.

While it is available for what amounts to "pre-order" at Best Buy, I wouldn't describe the players as "available" just yet. Who knows? It's conceivable that Best Buy is being overly optimistic or is misinformed about the release date. We'll see.

The 10/31 deadline applies to when Samsung first starts shipping the player to retailers, not when the players start showing up at buyers' doorsteps. It looks like Best Buy's dates are doorstep dates, and not the date that the player first leaves Samsung's warehouses. If the player first ships to retailers before 11/1 Blu-ray standards would allow Samsung to ship it as a Profile 1.0 player.

I wouldn't characterize the player as "delayed". I never saw any information from Samsung that claimed any release date other than "Quarter 4 2007".

It probably has come to Samsung's attention that LG's BH200 is about to show up in stores...to not miss out on all the possible sales to people who want dual players, they probably feel like they have to come out with their player now as well, even if there are some firmware bugs (I assume) that they would have loved to fix before coming out, but now they are 'forced' to come out already to compete directly with LG

This is exactly the same thing that BB did with the panny 10a. They put it up on their website 3-4 weeks before the machine showed up in stores....I do believe that we are close, but my gut tells me that it's going to be a total rat race trying to get one!

It is profile 1.1 "ready", with a firmware promised in January that will officially make it 1.1 compliant.

More info here.

Agreed. If you browse around to stores using their site - none actually have it - I checked maybe 30 stores all over the country using their search and nada. It is just on paper so far.

OTOH, it likely does indicate that release is coming and retailers are beginning to get information from Sammy on this. So the "end of year" predictions seen on some other threads are also probably not right.

I was leaning toward the LG but I think that Sammy just shot LG down in flames if it will be $200 cheaper!

that is clear, simple, and wrong.

Maybe I'm missing something, but on the Overview and Specification page on the Best Buy website, there is absolutely no mention of upconversion to 1080p for SD or 1080p output for regular HD sources. The Best Buy pages clearly say maximum output is 1080i/720p. I know on the specification pdf that I saw floating around on here from Samsung, it had 1080p upconversion and output, although the spec sheet also said "subject to change without notice".

You think this is the reason this is selling at $799? Maybe I'm just dumb and missing something obvious? Just an observation.

Probably just a mistake. Wouldn't be the first time their specs have been wrong.

Well, HD Guru Review tested otherwise.

"The Digital Video Essentials HD DVD confirmed full bandwidth output at 1080p (60) reproducing the single pixel on/off vertical and horizontal lines on the 1080p 50” (TH-59PZ750) Panasonic plasma used for this evaluation."

Also:

"1080p/24 output has been confirmed. It works beautifully. The player puts up a confirmation screen that must be acknowledged with an “accept”, if not the player will automatically revert back to the 1080p/60 setting to avoid a blank screen with displays that will accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24"

Seriously, no manufacturer would build this high end a player w/o 1080p these days....

From HiDef Digest:

Samsung just alerted us that it was dropping the HQV-equipped $600 BD-P2400 Blu-ray player from its lineup, and that it would stock the dual-format BD-UP5000 Duo HD player by "mid to late December". Yikes. It also says that while the Duo HD player will be BD Profile 1.1 "ready", it wouldn't actually play the 1.1 discs until it receives a firmware update at the end of January 2008.

Best Buy has updated their website now saying that the player is "Coming Soon". You can add it to a wishlist, but not place an order like you could have earlier this morning.

Will this unit pass bitstream of the new audio codecs via HDMI to a reciever capable of decoding those formats, or is just a LPCM output?

Yeah I agree 100%, but it makes you wonder where Best Buy got their specs from, and why it's listed like that. Regardless, thanks for clarifying!

on best buy website it says that this player decodes dolbly digital and dts-hd via bitstream, does it not decode dolby true HD? im sure it does but the didnt list it but they do list it for the samsung bdp1400. if this player doesnt it will be a deal breaker for me. the site also list that maximum output resolution is 1080i and not 1080p. what the heck?

Yep, I noticed that. I also got an e-mail from them with the subject "Your Item is Backordered" stating:

Dear Todd:

The item listed below is not yet available to be shipped. We expect to ship it within the next 1-2 weeks. We will ship the item sooner if it becomes available.

If you would like to discuss other possibilities for fulfilling your order, please call us at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) , and a Customer Care representative will gladly assist you. Please have your order number handy.

Your options may include:

* Finding a store in your area with your item in stock
* Ordering a similar in-stock item that meets your needs
* Cancelling your current order

We apologize for the inconvenience. If we do not hear from you before we ship your item, we will assume that you accept this delay.

Thank You.
Best Buy Customer Care

They still say 1-2 weeks but I have my doubts. I'm thinking they'll ship it to me sometime in late December.

Sorry, I think this question has been answered (as affirmative). Also from one of the other threads : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attac...7&d=1189736967

Maybe, just maybe, after the holidays, this player for $499. I may just have to take the plunge?

This is NOT true! I've called Best Buys in state of Louisiana, Texas, and Minnesota and check all inventory of other stores in the region, none of the stores stocks them.

It's looking more like in December 2007, right around Xmas time!

Well, as rp683 says, it looks like for now at least Best Buy has removed all mention of the BD-UP5000 from their website. I was able to grab one screenshot for those interested before it disappeared entirely.

So much for rumors...

Looks like just you and me then.

No matter when they ship this thing I can't wait to finally be able to play both formats on one machine. I don't yet own any HD-DVD's but I'm already putting together a list. Plus I'll finally be able to use my Harmony remote for everything instead of having the break out the PS3's bluetooth remote every time I want to watch a movie.
