Hardly. There are over 1000 HD titles (including all the imports and specialized discs). Niche would be D-VHS at only around 100 movies. Several other special purpose, demo and HDNET titles but still very few.

I wish that the HD-DVD stats/database was still up and running and I could tell you for sure. I have a friend that is trying to collect every HD-DVD ever made and he says there are around 1,100. This is including imports which I recall there being more of than domestic. The old HD-DVD stats page I think only had domestic titles? I just checked the Wayback machine (aka Internet Archive) for March 7th of 2009 which is the latest capture that is out there and that shows 436 titles. However all of the demo discs, special purpose discs, nature, many of the music titles and none of the imports are listed there. Also none of the porn of which there was/is many out there.

See, @ 440 I was almost dead on, and I knew that from way back. ...I was very big on HD DVD and I still have my 400 titles or so.

Ya, you're a ...savant. That database is missing a ton of discs that were released domestically, but it tends to focus more on movies and not the other ones. I wonder how many HDs are still exclusive to the format. I'm sure there is a discussion on here somewhere that spells that out. Can't be a lot these days. I don't really care. I have most all my optical media and but sold off or gave away a bunch of BDs that I didn't have on HD when I found them. There are still a couple I have on BD that I could have on HD instead. The exceptions are where the audio is better on the BD, but that was not the usual case when HD optical discs were 1st introduced. Typically the HDs had DD+ and the BDs a higher rate DD than on DVD. Not sure why, but I kinda like collecting obscure, antiquated, obsolete media. Only reason HD is obsolete is that it was made extinct, but still holds it's own comparably.

You want to know about HD DVD and how many titles were released here total in the USA; movies, documentaries and music videos?
Do you have a good web browser in your Mac, or PC? ...Did you check over @ HighDefDigest?

No I don't have a good web browser. I use Lynx on UNIX when I have to. Gopher, Archie and Veronica otherwise.

I didn't check there since it's not the best source for this info now. I did find this link with a pretty good list of exclusives. A little dated. I also ran into some threads here that state 484 domestic released titles. I don't think anyone knows for sure how many there really are out there including all the porn and international releases. I'm pretty sure my friend is right at around or over 1000. Personally I have a couple dozen titles that were only imports and also a few that I decided to get the UK releases rather than the US when the fire sale was going since they were less at the time.

I guess you missed my edited post above with the two links.

* The first link (wiki):
- USA = 475
- Japan = 236
- UK = 232
__________

Total: 943 HD DVD titles among three world continents (475 in the US).

____
____

** The second link; you are right: 484 domestic HD DVD titles.

________

Anyhow, between 400 and 500 HD DVD titles here in the US. {My first thought was roughly 440; seems now that there were few more...around 480 or so.}
...And worldwide, approximately 1,000 titles. ...Maybe more with the porn stuff; but this ain't true "videophilia artistica cinema" ... it's 'sexploitation'.

Must have missed that. Anyhow, do you know if the stats for UK and Japan are exclusives or some duplicated from the other countries? I assume those are all "unique" releases. If they are unique, I could be in big trouble if I start looking for all the imports I don't already own.

No, I don't know. But I'm 100% certain that they aren't...duplicates. They are their own unique releases, I'm convinced.

* Do you like older Japanese movies about samurai and all that stuff? ...Not like Kill Bill or John Wick, but the real Japanese black and white movies from the 50s and 60s, ...
...Harakiri style and Akira Kurosawa's films ...

The Judge loads and plays without a hitch. Forgot to report this Monday after I watched it. I even hit menu or some other button by mistake and stop by mistake once and selecting play move and pressing play after stop resumed the movie right where it was at. A far cry from some of the older problematic WB titles of the past.

Not into samurai movies. Have seen the Criterion of Seven Samurai and own Harakiri (Criterion BD) but haven't viewed it yet. I love Japanese culture, but just don't see what folks see in these movies. Perhaps they were before my time? I pretty much don't remember b/w TV and movies as color was invented and popular by the time I came along.

I don't remember when (which year) color TVs came? ...But I do remember watching B&W TV (round screen with glowing tubes in the back), in the 50s (Dad had one; 1955).

Finally got around to reverting the firmware and then back up to the new firmware. I was able to get the preferable loader code. (I left my notes at home so I don't remember the numbers offhand 1.2 to 1.7 I think)

Watched the new Xmen without issue, but I still can't play Hot Tub Time Machine without the counter menu popping up randomly on both the theatrical and special edition of the movie.

I will check this out when I have a chance. I'm pretty sure I own HTTM and don't recall this being an issue when it first came out and I rented it. Looks like it released after 1.6 was released a few weeks after anyway and I probably did not rent it until way after it released. It is possible that some bug in 1.7 is causing this.

In the meantime try turning off screen messages in the system menu and see if that fixes it.

Could be same issue as above. I recall there being a bonus view bug and I don't recall the specific workaround but turing of screen messages (Setup/Screen Setup/Screen Message/off) should fix that. However it turns off a bunch of useful screen displays, so you will want to turn it back on after watching the movie. You should be able to switch it on and off by hitting stop then setup then pressing play to resume the movie.

I don't own that one, so you are on your own there. I suspect that both of these have bonus view or other features that trip up the player that were never addressed. The are both pretty old titles (relatively).

I forgot to verify that, yes, to get to the preferred loader code you have to go back to 1.2 then up to 1.7.

So there is something seriously messed up with Hot Tub Time Machine. My version is the rental exclusive and I assume theatrical but it is having the same issue. The problem seems to be some mastering issues where the audio drops and it glitches out and by default the progress stuff shows up on screen. I experienced these issues on two different players running different loader code. I have not tried older firmware to see if the bug was introduced in 1.7 but my guess is that 1.4 and 1.6 might also have the issue. The disc may not even play with 1.4 since this is a fox/mgm and they changed their code and DRM just before it's release.

When I have more time I will try it on my project player under 1.4 and 1.6 but I don't expect anything different since fox code is unchanged since 1.6 afaIK.

I probably did not rent this disc and watched it on cable. I picked it up either at a Blockbuster blowout or clearance sale for probably a buck.

I will eventually report this to Sammy, but the chances of getting a problem with this old of a movie fixed theses days would be pretty much nil at this point.

Thanks to all of your hard work! Seems to be running smoother now. I hope to be trying some of the newer Marvel movies soon so this player will start getting some fairly regular use after collecting dust for months.

I'll try the screen settings change on HTTM and see if that helps. I was also thinking of turning on the captions because it may override the counter and be less annoying than the random pop up stuff.

You are welcome. For me I have noticed that my loader runs cooler than it used to with the assumed preferred code. Could just be a placebo but discs are just warm to the touch and not hot like they used to be when I ejected them.

Don't waste your time. It seems to be some kind of mastering error. Frequent drops in audio and sputters and pixeling with the pic. Every time that happens the counter pops up again. I did not think to turn on captions, so that would be worth a try, but I doubt that it will help and won't help the audio drops and sputtering video.

I just got around to reporting the issues with; Noah, Wolf of Wall Street, Boyhood, TMNT, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Hot Tub Time Machine.

I wasn't too concerned with the Paramount movies since you can get them to run. I doubt this will get any action, but you never know. Since HTTM is a current re-release at the box since the sequel is coming out we might see some action on that one and if so should fix any Fox/MGM of the era that has the issue.

And as always strength in numbers will get action. So if you have experienced these problems, please call them and escalate to tier 2 support if you can get them to.

So I am wondering; since I own six players now and parts for almost a 7th do my bug reports count as one or seven? I made a point in my last report (HTTM) that I tested on 2 of the 6 that I own.

I am now in possession of a player that has 1.7 but loader code 1112 (or might be 1113 but I'm away from the pic of code screen right now). Anyhow the player was running 1.3 when I got it in my hands so I think it must have had either original, 1.0 or 1.1 code on it before it was upgraded to 1.3 since I know that 1.3 ALWAYS updated to 8124. I'm going to keep it this way and see if there are any differences in behavior. Only thing I notice now is that the loader is crazy noisy. Probably because my current main player one is quite quiet with BDs and not too bad with HDs.

Oh and sorry it running 1.7 and my main player with 8124 code both had the issue with HTTM. The ONLY thing that may help there is going back to 1.4 or 1.6.
