I did not have any issues with mine, however, and I did not know this until today, it is the Canadian alliance version. I bought this and filed it away and never looked at it. I was going to open it up and redeem the digital copies but I looked those up and I don't think the expire until this year, but that is for the U.S. release so I may be SOL. From the outside you can't tell they are Canadian until you remove the outer wrap. I beleve I was under the impression I was purchasing the U.S. release but that was way back in the fall of '11 that I acquired this.

Is yours the U.S. release? If so someone else with the same will need to check this out. I find it odd that after all these years you are the only one to try these in the 5k. You might want to go back and try now that you have played the others. Could be a persistent memory issue and require a cold start or deletion of the memory.

The Theory of Everything (rental) loads and plays without issue.

Has anyone else had a chance to check out LotR Extended US release to see if they have the same issue as Sancho?

No problems here. Both BD and DVD load up and play without issue. The DVD even loads and is not rejected which is not true with many recent Disney releases. Well maybe not that recent, been going on for about 5 years now. I rarely check the DVDs in the 5K unless someone complains. After all it's a BLU-RAY player. Why would you play a DVD in it ;-)

What is the last/current (date & version) software update for the BD-UP5000?

Actually, I'm still holding a grudge that HD-DVD lost the battle. I know it's a lost cause but in my mind it was the superior media. as such I only own a few BD's. Most of our viewing is DVD-based. Does animation look that much better on Blu than DVD? I might just switch back to my Toshiba HD-A1 and grab a refurb Oppo and join the Blu side once and for all

Everything can look better in HD... whether it does or not depends on how it was originally produced and the care taken in the process of making the HD transfer. Poor film stock or video editing renders HD nearly impossible... Quality film stock means we can go back and get better resolution for HD transfers.

If the animated show has the original cells or was originally produced for film (theatrical) release... then there is likely good quality to go back and get an HD transfer. IF the animation cells don't exist and the show was edited on video, then no... HD wouldn't do much for it.

As for HD-DVD vs Blu-ray... I'm disappointed in the way the "war" was won... with each side trying to strongarm and bribe their way to acceptance with the major studios. That disappoints me in lots of business decisions... but even when I had first put money into HD-DVD, I knew Blu-ray had more upside because of its larger storage capacity.

I never cared for the interactive stuff from either format. It amuses me to no end that all the "Blu-ray interactive will be much better than HD-DVD interactive" arguments during the "war" amount to nothing as most people care about zero for the interactive stuff once Blu-ray finally got theirs going...

I really wish there was no format war at all. That's really the problem... that that one side "won"... but that the companies couldn't get together on this in the first place and prevent all the nonsense.

Me do not have signature.
Where I am when I'm not here!

All I truly want is Disney PIXAR in 3D and in 4K, on Blu. ...And in 3D sound too: DTS:X ...Here, not over there.

* You think I'll get it? ...I don't think so! ...The stars are not properly aligned in the great northern sky for this to happen anytime soon.
Then I'll simply make myself comfortably numb with 'Interstellar' in 2D/2K and in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround. ...And on Blu of course.
...Because HD DVD is no more.

I used to also, but hey, it's now 2015 and the format war has been over for 7 years now. Looking back, not saying it was a good thing, but BD was for sure going to overtake HD. Already been mentioned about the capacity issues. My biggest issue at the time with BD was the whole BD-Java thing and all the endless firmware updates in the beginning. HD had it's fair share of issues also. However once the initial issues were taken care of it was a much more stable format in the beginning. Now all of that is moot. I like the anti-scratch coating on BDs but that doesn't prevent idiots from damaging them like the 1st copy of Imitation Game that I rented yesterday and went to play it today discovering that someone had dropped it, took a chip out of the edge and put a giant crack in the disc. Needless to say the disc would not play.

Oh and animation looks amazing in HD. Quite a difference from just upcoverting DVD. But that gives a decent experience also.

The Imitation Game loads and plays perfectly. I have avoided this movie based on some of it's content but glad that I watched it. Great movie. It and The Theory of Everything were better options for best picture than that Birdman crap. Hated that movie. I haven't seen Selma or Whiplash yet so I can't pin the title on one of them yet. I have Whiplash downloaded and probably won't watch Selma.

'The Imitation Game' is good, very good, but not as good as 'Birdman'. ...From my own viewpoint.

No issues with Night at the Museum: Secret or the Toumb. It did take an extremely long time to load. Even the initial blue bubble screen, but it is a Fox release so that explains it.
