Hey all,
I got the BD-UP5000 from Best Buy for $640 with a coupon. My 30 return window is coming soon. I'm wondering since it's being discontinued (May?), should i return it and wait to see if the promised updates show up and hope to get it cheaper than $640 when it's discontinued later on?
Thanks everyone!!

I would. I took mine back. Didn't care for the risk. I am fine with my HDA2 and BD10 until either the 5000 is updated or I just forget HD-DVD altogether and get the upcoming BD50.

640 is a great price. I got the BH200 for 599 and would have considered the 5000 for the same amount...

How do you get that coupon? I went BB yesterday and I only saw 3 of them and they were going for $799.

Me too. Best Buy and Amazon are both still pretending the list price is actually $999, and considering $799 a "sale".

you won't need any coupons. while i agree that 640 was a great price in december (before the sh_t hit the fan for hddvd), it should be a helluva lot cheaper in the near term.

The Big River has a great price on the BD-UP5000 today. If the player didn't have so many playback issues and lack of promised audio decoding, I'd buy at that price, but given the circumstances I want a lower price still.

The individual playback issues are laid out here and are not that plentiful: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=958595

Those plus the occasional 24fps bug and audio dropouts, all of which are fixable with firmware.

Even if the issues aren't plentiful, it's enough for me to be cautious especially with Samsung making statements like this. Also, ability to decode the high-end audio formats internally is a big justification for the price of the unit to me, so until we know for sure that ability is coming, the price is a little much for me to swallow even at $630.

Alrighty then. Just making sure you're aware of the status quo. 1.1 profile compatibility would also be nice, even at $630!

Good news...

Check Amazon.com (or Vann's). Prices today (2/19) are similar to what's been quoted as "deal" prices in this thread.

Wasn't that the supposed reason the player was originally delayed from September to December? Guess not.

I bought one off Ebay NIB yesterday... combined with my Ebay 10% coupon code I got it for $520 shipped So prices definately are coming down. Even without the coupon the winning bid was like $565.

www.visions.ca has the unit on sale on its website for $499. This is a Canadian website and I live in Toronto and the shipping is less than $15 from western Canada. The info on the website indicates that it only has a 90 day labour warranty which suggests that it may not be sourced from Samsung Canada. However, Visions is a fairly big chain in western Canada so I took the chance and ordered it. If there turns out to be a problem it won't cost me that much to ship it back. If it is a good unit, this is a great price in Canada.

Must be from the US since the info on the warranty in the manuals differ between US and Canadian Samsung sites.

They have some in stock and they are $676. Probably less if you know someone there.

It turns out that Visions Electronics (www.visions.ca) had the wrong warranty info on the website. They advised me that there is a full 1 year warranty and that they are an authorized Samsung Canada dealer. They have changed the website. I took a chance and ordered one on the weekend and it shipped late this afternoon. At $499 this is the best deal I have seen on this unit. I should get it by next Tuesday at the latest (it is shipping from British Columbia).

I was in Futureshop today and the LG 200 has dropped to $499. The salesman told me they pay $750 for the Samsung unit. I do not know if this is correct but I am starting to think that the pricing on the website was a mistake.

When it gets to $599 at BB or Circuit City, I will get one. It seems that some of the problems with this player can be strictly related to the individual player, not the whole series. I would rather have a B&M to whom I can exchange in case I get one that has problems of its' own. Plus the ability to return it under the extended warranty if it does not perform as advertised.

would you consider rebuying the 5000 if/when Samsung releases "the update" and the price is around $500? Or would you just get a dedicated BR player like the Panny BD50?

Every night I'm about to pull the trigger on this bad boy and balk for the very reasons you stated.
