Did some limited listening to the 983H with a couple of SACDs (Dire Straits, Audiophile voices) through my bottlehead tube pre-amp in pure 2-ch. All that I can say right now is that it was about half an hour of beautiful music, that made me smile throughout. I have to say, I haven't done such listening in almost a year and the bottlehead pre had some bad connection last night I had to debug and solder but after it was done, Oh my, what pure listening pleasure. This is the first time, I get to listen to SACDs with an analog section geared towards audiophiles. Simply astounding performance!
I will be listening more in multi-ch shortly, but there is that magic of 2-ch that is hard to explain. I love it!
Get a 983H if you can!

One more thing, if you play multi-ch SACDs through HDMI, then make sure to set the resolution (yes I mean video) to a higher resolution (see manual for that limit). If not, what you get is 2ch FL and FR that goes to your pre (something to do with the HDMI spec for bandwidth that is kind of weird). I first thought something was wrong with the 983H but it was the resolution and down-mix to be set to 5.1. Enjoy!

I do not understand the purpose of preamp in this case:
1. OPPO has it's own volume control;
2. Preamp can not improve the sound - the sound as good as analog part of OPPO.
Am I missing something?
Thank you.

It does? Which one? I have the 980H and I'm not aware of a volume control.

Yes, it has an output level trim.

And to answer Homosapien, it's not the best way to control the volume. And preamps do other things besides control the volume.

Sorry, I don't really consider that an adequate (if even usable) volume control. Either way, you're right, there is much more to a preamp than volume control.

I have OPPO 971 connected directly to amp and controle volume on remote. I just ordered OPPO 980 and assumed that it also has volume control. What else can I gain ( I do not switch sources) adding analog preamp?
Thank you.

It's more like a gain control[Oppo], and it should be set to the max to achieve the standard 2v output. A typical preamp will provide much more then that which will give better S/N ratio.

OK, thank you.
Do you think it make sense to get high end tube preamp for OPPO 980 with HT bypass (I am going to have multichannel pre/pro later)?
The rest of the system is EAD PM1000 and Proac 1.5.
Thank you.

I can't comment on that, as I'm very happy with my Integra Pre/Pro, but I would recommend you to buy the MCH Pre/Pro first, and if you're not happy with the 2 ch sound, maybe you can invest in a dedicated 2 ch preamp.

Guys I am using 983 mainly for 2 channel analog listening and it sound excellent. I feel that the sound is a big improvement over 980 especially with the new upgrades. You can check out my mini review on the 983.
