Well, my fellow music-loving gents; happy New Year, and so long...all in one, final post!
If you'll peek left...you'll see; this is my 9,998th post
Long ago...when I was amazed, at amassing 5k; I sort of promised myself, I would NOT go 5-figures, lol. Well...that time is upon me. There are 2 threads, I regularly
contributed to...here at AVS; I've made my "farewell" post, at the other...now this one. Then I'm going to keep the 9,999th in my back-pocket...just in case.
I've loved this thread. I'm an audiophile, through and through; I love the gear
. But for me...it always starts with music. I've got a ~$25,000 system...because I'm blessed to be able to; but if I had
to listen, on a $300 headphone rig...I could. Just as long, as I had my Terabytes of files...and TIDAL
I hope I've turned some of you, on to a title...that's become a favorite spin, and you would have never come across otherwise. I know some of you, have done that for me...and is why, I will continue to lurk and like; because it doesn't count against the post total, lol.
It being the end of one year, and beginning of the next...I'm doing a lot of my annual Best Of
listening. Perusing the various lists, looking for titles that a) I'm not already familiar with, but b) seem to be on most of everyone's tally; the consensus
, Best Ofs...
There's still, really good music being made. I guess the most "interesting" thing, I've come across so far (that is, that I hadn't heard before)...is Titus Andronicus' The Most Lamentable Tragedy
. I need a few more listens, before I decide if it's a s p r a w l i n g
mess (albeit a good one)...or pure genius, lol. Also...Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment's Surf
, is pretty damn good too.
For this last post...I decided to go out with a bang; and do something, I've always wanted
to do...but knew better. A Top 10 list
Why have I known better, and now do it...with a modicum of "embarrassment" (as represented, by my emoticon...lol)? Oh...
A) It's HARD! I mean c'mon; we're musicologists, one and all. It's easy, to pick your 10 favorite albums, or what you think are the 10 "best" albums...when you're picking from the 100 you know. But we know thousands
, if not tens of thousands of titles. Narrowing that list and loves, down to 10...is trite, arbitrary, and downright impossible. I mean...even as I caught up, on the last 10 pages of posts; I'm seeing albums, where I'm like "Oh...how can you not have any YES on your list! Or Hendrix!". I've given it a lot of thought...and tried to make a list, that's not "here...let me impress you, with my
10 favorite albums"; but rather, take a BIG view...while still injecting, a little bit of CD flavor in there. I mean...in some cases (and while I won't be doing any reviews
, I'll make a comment...here and there), the title I list from an artist...might not even be my favorite listen from them. So...how does it make it into a Top 10, if it's not even my favorite
from them? Again...BIG picture; I think it has more "importance", or was more "ground-breaking" or universally liked...as opposed to just being my favorite.
B) It's INDULGENT! LOL
I mean, WhoTF am I...and who cares, what I think are the 10 best albums ever made? But I've made 9,997 posts, and this is my last one here; so I'm going to indulge...lol.
As I've said...the list is hardly conclusive; I could change my mind tomorrow, move things around (and I will
edit it). And I will continue to lurk, am always available through PM...and will regularly be posting elsewhere. If you want to make a "challenge", publicly or privately; maybe you'll convince me, to make a substitution.
OK, enough already. As Casey Kasem would say..."on with the countdown"...
10. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
9. The Who - TOMMY
8. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
I know the "safe" pick here, is Blonde on Blonde
...or Highway 61 Revisited
; but I'm a sucker for biting anger and pain.
7. Radiohead - OK Computer
I listen, to Kid A
more regularly; but this changed music, and put Radiohead on the map.
6. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
5. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The first, of several tough pics...coming towards the top of the list. I love, the mercurial highs and lows...of the White Album
; but how do you argue against this one?
4. Neil Young - Harvest
3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Again...a tough pick here. DSotM, is so over-played; it's easy, to dismiss it...now that it's out of vogue. And AFAIC, TPatGoD was every bit, as "revolutionary"...as Sgt. Pepper (and both in '67, the year of my birth). But there's a reason
, Dark Side...is so "over-played", and considered a trite pick. In the end...it's that GREAT!
2. Joni Mitchell - BLUE
Again...you'll find me playing, Court and Spark
more; but this is Joni laid bare...and as I said earlier. I'm a sucker for pain.
1. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
As hard as this list was, at times; I always had a clear picture, of what topped the heap. Sure...it doesn't have the "social importance" of Sgt. Pepper, or the "must-own" nature of DSotM. It didn't start the garage-band movement, like VU did. But this is where, it becomes my
list; because this is
...my favorite album.
Van, songs, band...m u s i c
There you have it! I hope the thread, won't become hijacked...with others, who feel the need to indulge in their Top 10. Remember...I only got to do it, because of the 9,997 posts that came before it; and
...because it will be my very last post, in this thread EVER, lol.
So if you're prepared for that
...great; let's see your
Otherwise...enjoy mine, and thanks for indulging me
Happy New Year, and may 2016 bring you more beautiful music. CD
